ISLAMABAD: As many as 54,000 became new members of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in less than a week, as the partys countrywide membership campaign gains momentum, party leaders said Saturday.
We are going for an essential democratic process, which we call intra-party election and we firmly believe, everything will go fine. Nominations will not work in PTI, as this is the norm of other big parties like PML-N, said PTIs Central Spokesman Zahid Hussain Kazmi. Before the campaign, the party had 1.5 million registered members, out of these 0.6 million joined it through SMS and the rest through formal methods such as filling in membership forms. Till now, 1 million membership cards have been dispatched to different parts of Pakistan and majority of these were sent to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, said a spokesperson of the party Tahir Jamil, when The News contacted him for his views on the matter. He added at this stage, it was too difficult to say, how many would be filled in, but, he said, their expectations were high. Fifty-thousand persons became members of PTI through its SMS facility. What an individual is needed to do is to send his or her and his or her city name to 80022 to formally become a part of Imrans party. Over 4,000 persons became PTI members by registering in the party website.
The day, the membership campaign was launched, the number of its members stood at 1,32946 and on Saturday, it was recorded at 1,37428 on the PTI Website.
