The country’s 50th anniversary of independence celebrations will begin on March 26 in Dhaka and will continue till December 16 across the country with the aim to spread the spirit of the war among youths and children.

Following the first meeting of the cabinet committee formed for celebrating the 50th anniversary of independence, liberation war affairs minister AKM Mozammel Huq told the press at his office on Sunday that the main target of the celebrations would be to spread the spirit and history of the liberation war among school and college students as well as foreigners.

Foreign leaders will be invited to the inauguration ceremony of the celebrations, Mozammel Huq said.

An international business summit would also be organised in Dhaka, he said, adding that acclaimed writers and war-crime researchers would be invited to attend the international conferences during the summit.

A monument in the memory of the allied forces would be installed at Ashuganj of Brahmanbaria, he said.

‘As per the primary plan, the celebration programmes will be inaugurated either at Suhrawardy Udyan or at the army parade ground depending on the COVID-19 situation,’ Mozammel said.

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina would be invited to chair the inauguration programme while president Abdul Hamid will be requested to attend the programme as the chief guest, he said.

‘Since our main target is to spread the spirit of the War of Independence among students, we will organise nationwide programmes for nine months involving the students of schools, colleges and universities,’ he said.

Several documentary and feature films to commemorate military operations during the war, including Operation Jackpot, would be made, he said, adding that many e-books, animation films and mobile apps featuring the history of the war and the political context of the declaration of independence as well as the pledges made to the people during the war.

A group of 50 freedom fighters carrying 50 national flags would visit all 64 districts and district administrations would organise special programmes, he said.

‘The motivation behind independence was to ensure food, clothing and shelter for all the citizens, which has not yet been achieved. Under the leadership of prime minister Sheikh Hasina, the current government is working to fulfil the pledges made during the war,’ he said.

Mozammel said that video clips will be made on the 90,000 living freedom fighters and they would also be invited to share their experience during the war in interactive programmers with schoolchildren.

The draft celebration plan would be finalised by February to be placed for the prime minister’s approval, Mozammel said.

The information minister Hasan Mahmud was assigned the task of finalising the theme song of the 50th anniversary of independence celebrations, education minister Dipu Moni was assigned to finalise its logo while state minister for information and communication technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak was assigned with the task of developing a website, Mozammel said.

Information minister Hasan Mahmud, local government and rural development minister Md Tajul Islam, foreign minister AK Abdul Momen, among others, were present at the first meeting of the cabinet committee.
