5 reasons why India needs to worry about China’s military base in Djibouti

Djibouti’s position on the northwestern edge of the Indian Ocean has fuelled worries in India that it would become another of China’s “string of pearls” of military alliances and assets ringing India.

China has picked Djibouti to set up its first overseas military base and ships carrying troops set sail on Tuesday, Chinese media said.

  • Beijing says the base will aid in peacekeeping and humanitarian missions but that is not how India views it.

Five reasons why the latest bid by China to expand its global reach has India worried:

    1. Situated on the northwestern edge of the Indian Ocean, Djibouti could become another of China’s “string of pearls” of military alliances and assets ringing India, including Bangladesh, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. :enjoy:

    2. China has stepped up activity in the Indian Ocean, which New Delhi considers within its sphere of influence, in recent days, citing anti-piracy patrols and freedom of navigation. The Indian Navy has sighted more than a dozen Chinese warships, including submarines and intelligence-gathering vessels, during the last two months, forcing it to tighten surveillance of the strategic waters.

    3. The Indian Ocean shipping lanes carry 80% of the world’s oil and a third of the global bulk cargo. China is looking to secure its energy and trade transportation links along the vital shipping route. The Indian Ocean is also emerging as the playground for countries eyeing a bigger role in world affairs. China is looking to generate goodwill and influence in the Indian Ocean countries by investing in projects such ports, roads and railways.

    4. Beijing has officially described it as a logistics facility and said China would not seek military expansionism or get into arms races no matter what happened but the state-run Global Times said on Wednesday there could be no mistake that this was, in fact, a military base. “Certainly this is the People’s Liberation Army’s first overseas base and we will base troops there,” it said.

    5. China is looking to expand its presence in the Indian Ocean, and is building ports and other infrastructure in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan. The Indian Ocean figures prominently in President Xi Jinping’s ambitious One Belt, One Road initiative to build a new Silk Route. :enjoy:

. .
A Chinese base will be only threat to India,if it's near to mainland. These bases will be logistics nightmare in event of prolonged conflict.

Only a base in BD,Sri Lanka or Myanmar will be real threat to IN.

The Djibouti base is too far from India. It is defenseless. Djibouti does not have a real army to defending it.
Indian navy Tu-142 or Il-38 can light up Chinese bases with long range cruise missiles.

. .
Dragon is basically surrounding India from every direction.gwadar port will also serve the purpose.China and India basically hate each other just because of 62war.

If that's the logic then India and china should not be doing trade worth $80 billion dollars!!!!

And the Chinese would be sucking their thumbs in the meantime I'm sure......

China _makes_ their own H-6 bombers.

What are the Indian equivalents that India makes??

Oh wait - there are NONE!!!!

Indian navy to mount Brahmos on Tu-142 instead of IL-38

NEW DELHI - The Indian navy has decided to mount the BrahMos missile on its eight Tupolev Tu-142 maritime surveillance aircraft instead of its Ilyushin IL-38s, after a recent crash between two IL-38s left the aircraft in short supply. Two of the navy's five IL-38s were destroyed in an Oct. 1 collision during an air show in Goa (DAILY, Oct. 3). The BrahMos, a supersonic anti-ship cruise missile also called PJ-10, was developed jointly by Russia's NPO Mashinostroeniya and India ...

BTW - the Indian Tu-142's were retired in March of this year....India had eight downgraded Tu-142MKs.

The H-6 bombers are not at Djibouti. Djibouti is siting duck to Indian naval air attack.

this assumes Djibouti allows China to use their bases in a war which is unlikely

You know how much China trades with US and Japan? Money is money, we see it for what it is. No need to bring feelings or anything else into this.

There are limits to what India and China can and will do in a war, if there ever were one. If India ever attacks a land base that China occupies, there would be retaliation. Every side understands this, so even in a conflict there are limits to what can be done.

Any conflict that does happen would most likely happen over a few days, it isn't whether Djibouti allows China to use its base, so much as China can use its assets already there instead of having to travel all the way from China.

Also Indian naval air is weak at the moment, as is China's. It is not nearly enough to mount an attack on a military base. You need at least French level of air power to be able to do that. Even Russia is in capable of attack anything but ISIS.

everyone has a base in Djibouti
Apparently not you, well obviously you don't need one there, but there is no East or South Asia equivalent to a Djibouti base for India.

That's the idea of capitalism, you do not go to war with the countries which you trade the most, that's the reason, china will not go to war with the US. japan or India.

No China will not, but that doesn't mean China doesn't fight with US and Japan in other areas. Truth be told, this base isn't much of anything, in strategic terms, but it means China is taking its first step in securing and increasing its interest in Africa, that is the point.

Also, securing this base increase Chinese prestige, and in turn makes China a much bigger force in South Asia, just he fact China is here, does the same as the US in east asia. It won't necessarily translate into war, or even mentions of war, but it does offer an alternative to other South Asian countries which would complicate India's position in South Asia.

If you see any communist around here or in China let me know. They are more rare than the Panda now.

If you read Chinese history, Mao only actually studied communism half way through his revolution. After the long march. What is Communism with Chinese characteristics? Not communism, if it were, they would have just call it communism.
