3. Bangalore/Bengaluru International Airport

Chennai airport is the main hub for arrivals and departures in south India.
It handles around 8 million passengers a year, over half of which are flying domestically.
The airport is operated by the Indian government and a redevelopment of its terminals is currently being carried out.

Chennai? are you kidding me? its one of the worst airports in India. You should see the housekeeping there its atrocious, there are pigeons flying even inside the airport , crapping everywhere. not to mention cobwebs everywhere. as for the food available, lets just say the best thing there is maggie.

My take on the major Indian Airports

1 Delhi - I will give full marks to both the T3 and the ID terminals. Good showcase of Indian Culture and also very efficient. The metro connectivity to the city is also good. Only drawback is Metro does not connect the 1D terminal and we have to get down at an intermediate station and take the shuttle bus. I believe the new metro line is going to connect the iD terminal also.

2 Bangalore - Good airport but a big drawback is that it is 40 KM from the city. Though there are BMTC bus services to the airport a metro connectivity to the city would be appreciated. There was a plan to restart the old Bangalore airport for short haul/Low Cost Carrier flights. I believe this is really neccesary. The flight time from Bangalore to Chennai or Hyderabad is less than the time to go from the airport to the city.

3 Mumbai - Overall a very good airport but too congested. I have not seen the arts museum in the new T2 but the facillities are great. The Mumbai airport suffers the opposite problem of Bangalore airport. It is in the heart of the city and there is no place to expand. It is the second busiest airport in the country and it is bursting to the seems. Se desperately need the Navi Mumbai airport to start functioning to take some burden off the Mumbai airport.

4 Kolkata - I travelled through Kolkata airport around 5 years ago and it was very pathetic and chaotic. I don't know the situation right now. I hope it has improved. It should also be put into private hands but I dont see it happening in a Mamata/communist ruled state

5 Hyderabad - Been there only once and liked the new airport. Cant comment on the airport much but hope the privatization has improved the services

6 Chennai - Never been there so no comments

Overall I think the govt should make a point to have 2 airports in the major cities. In delhi if someone from greater Noida has to take a flight he has to travel 50 KM. Hydrabad and bangalore airports are 40 KM from the city centers.

Look at Newyork, London, Washington DC and other major cities. They function well with 2-3 airports. What we can do is open the old bangalore and hydrabad airports for short haul flights upto 1000 KMs, Build a new airport in Navi Mumbai and somewhre in the greater noida/noida belt

Let us see if this will give a big boost to the tousirm and aviation sector

I agree with other people, why is the no Kolkata? Kolkata's new airport is absolute amazing, though it does have a ridiculous, long name, maybe that's why you didn't mention it, cause you couldn't remember it ;p Netaji Sbhas Chandra Bose Internationa Airport.

Its a good one no doubt. I liked the new terminal. Fantastic.

The only problem is that it is not privatized. Sarkari attitude prevalent among the officials at the airport.

The only 2 major airports of India that remain in Government hands are Kolkata and Chennai. I wish they privatize them as soon as possible.
