42% polling in Jammu and Kashmir

Ignoring the separatists' call for a boycott of elections, an estimated 42 per cent of over 12 lakh voters cast their ballots in Baramulla and Ladakh Lok Sabha constituencies in the fifth and last phase in Jammu and Kashmir today.

"As per tentative figures available with election office here, 42 per cent voting was recorded in Baramulla and ladakh parliamentary constituencies", Chief Electoral Officer B R Sharma told reporters this evening.

He said these figures may go up as reports from 15 polling booths in Ladakh Lok Sabha constituency were still awaited while polling could not be held at two polling booths of snow-bound Zanskar assembly segment in the same constituency. The polling will be held in these two booths on May 15, Sharma said.

Giving details, he said Baramulla parliamentary constituency recorded 40 per cent polling while Ladakh recorded between 60 to 65 per cent.

The overall poll percentage in the two constituencies was 42 per cent, he said, adding that the day was incident-free.

In 2004 parliamentary elections, Baramulla had recorded 35.66 per cent polling while Ladakh had recorded 73.52 per cent polling.

The valley does not have that many Hindus, its mainly Muslim. The hindus are more in Srinagar (where oddly the turnout was even lower) and south Kashmir while Ladakh is Buddhist-Muslim-Hindu. The numbers compare pretty well with 4th phase polling over all of India which is about 51%. This is notwithstanding the call for boycott by separatists.

If one were to read data like you do, most Pakistani's support Taliban. A survey says 47% of Pakistanis are anti-Taliban virtually identical to Indian poll results in Kashmir. Should we read that data to mean exact opposite ?

Urgent priority for Pakistan to tackle terror: Brown NEW YORK: A Gallup poll survey released Wednesday says the Pakistan government may have some popular support for its actions despite a major offensive against Taliban insurgents which has displaced more than half a million Pakistanis.

According to the survey conducted in December, before the current military operation, nearly half of Pakistanis (47%) believed the Taliban's presence in some areas of the country has a negative influence; 14% said it has a positive influence and 39% had no opinion.

The survey concludes that although much has changed in Pakistan since the Gallup survey, with a troubled economy and many Pakistanis struggling to afford food and shelter even before this crisis, any popular support for the offensive could hinge on how Pakistan handles the internal refugee situation.

In the event that the offensive successfully drives out the Taliban, what the government does then will be nearly as crucial to Pakistan's future as the military operation itself.

Displaced Pakistanis who escaped the fighting will need help with rebuilding their homes, schools, and businesses when and if they return home. They will also require some type of assurance that the government will continue to pressure the militants and keep them from returning again.

In the NWFP, where a resurging Taliban has used often-brutal tactics to extend its control in the last year, roughly half of residents (49%) told Gallup in December that the presence of the Taliban has a negative influence. While only 10% in this province said the Taliban had a positive influence, 41% said they did not know or would not say.

Sizable percentages in the Sindh (44%) and Punjab (60%) provinces also saw the Taliban's influence as negative. However, the picture looked different in the province of Baluchistan, where some fear the Taliban will flee during the military operation. Here, similar percentages said the Taliban's influence is positive (21%) as said its influence is negative (22%) and the highest percentage of any region (58%) said they did not know or would not say.

Relief agencies estimate that the number of Pakistanis fleeing the Swat valley and nearby districts could soon swell to as many as 1 million, further inflating the number who have been displaced since last August.

This mass exodus poses a humanitarian crisis in a country where many are already struggling to provide the basics: More than 3 in 10 Pakistanis told Gallup that there had been times when they could not afford food for their families in the last year and nearly 2 in 10 said they had been unable to buy adequate shelter. In NWFP, roughly a third of residents said they were unable to afford food or shelter at times.

Stop name calling. It is against forum rules and generally stops discussion.

I was putting your assertion that there were only 20% muslims voting in perspective. I was saying is that 47% or 42% actually stands for a proper support. In the case of Kashmir too it is probably valid to say that some low percentage people would have been actually opposed the elections with a good 39-45% who would not vote in any case (same as Indian average).

42% voting in 5th phase: CEO

Highest In Handwara; Lowest In Sopur

FAHEEM ASLAM

Srinagar, May 13: Terming the fifth phase of polls in Jammu and Kashmir as incident-free but most challenging, the chief electoral officer, B R Sharma, said 42 per cent polling was recorded in Varmul and Ladakh parliamentary constituencies which went to polls on Wednesday amid tight security.
Giving details, Sharma said the Varmul constituency recorded 41 per cent voting while Ladakh recorded 60-65 per cent polling. “These figures are tentative as we are yet to receive polling figures from several polling stations in Zankskar and Leh. But I can confirm 61 percent voting in Ladakh as of now,” he told reporters during a press conference here.
Flanked by divisional commissioner Kashmir, Masood Samoon, inspector general of police Kashmir, Dr B Srinivias, the CEO said Bandipora and Kupwara districts recorded 53 and 42 per cent polling respectively.
Sharma said the voting in 19 assembly segments was recorded as: Karnah (59), Kupwara (50), Lolab (44), Langate (43), Handwara (67), Varmul (22), Uri (37), Rafiabad (63), Sopur (12), Sangrama (27), Gulmarg (28), Pattan (29), Bandipora (32), Gurez (50), Sonawari (51), Nobra (70), Leh (50), Kargil (67), and Zanskar (67).
Comparing today’s figures with 2004 parliamentary polls, Sharma said Varmul and Ladakh constituencies had recorded 35.5 and 72 percent polling respectively. The highest 67 per cent polling was recorded in Handwara Assembly segment while the lowest 12 per cent polling was witnessed at Sopur, the home town of the Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani.
The CEO said 32 per cent migrant voters voted in the 5th phase in 17 polling stations set up for them in Jammu, Delhi and Udhampur.
Thirteen candidates, including a woman, were in the fray for Varmul parliamentary constituency. Prominent among them were National Conference leader Sharief-ud-Din Shariq, Peoples Democratic Party’s Muhammad Dilawar Mir and Sajjad Gani Lone of Peoples Conference. The Panthers Party had fielded a 27-year-old graduate who is langhising in Tihar Jail for the past three years while the Awami National Conference had fielded a former militant, Ghulam Rasool Shah alias Imran Rahi.
The CEO said the 5th phase was most challenging. “This was the most challenging phase for us as we had to transport men and machinery in advance to several polling stations in Ladakh following bad weather. There was extensive use of Indian Air Force helicopters, both Cheetah and M 17, which ferried men and machinery to 97 polling stations.
Polling in two polling booths in Zanaskar assembly segment could not take place today as poll staff and material could not be airlifted from Kargil because of bad weather, Sharma said. He said polling in these two polling booths will now be held on May 15.

COMPLAINTS
Sharma said the Chief Electoral Office received several complaints from political parties from Tuesday evening. “These complaints were based more on apprehensions. But we strengthened the police and security surveillance in these polling booths and installed cameras to check any untoward incidents,” he said, adding that since Wednesday morning, they received complaints that Electronic Voting Machines were malfunctioning in 12 booths, seven in Varmul and five in Ladakh. “The EVMs in two polling stations were replaced,” he said, adding that the office also received 19 other complaints, where the zonal and sectoral officers acted immediately to ascertain the factual position.
Regarding seizure of some vehicles in Kupwara that allegedly ferried mobile voters, Sharma said, “The office didn’t receive any such complaint. But we can get it verified.”
Police sources however said at least 17 vehicles were seized in Kupwara which allegedly ferried mobile voters. “The vehicles had been hired by prominent political parties,” they said.

Growler can you ever talk anything out of the context of religion. See there is a huge world out there, so its would be great to come out of the small box of religious thaught's, and view the world in other context also. :disagree:

No hard feeling but there are lots of other things other than religion.

Kashmir has 93.6% Muslims. 4% hindus. If you want to look it at religious lines, then only about 1% out of the 42% will be hindus, rest all Indian Muslims. Even seperatists were contesting elections, and had also called for a boycott. Its a victory for Indian democray, and clear non acceptance of anything other than India.

.
Which goes to prove, that you take out miitants threat, a Kashmiri would vote like any citizen of India. The whole 'freedom fighter' fiasco is created by Pakistan backed militants and non Kashmiris who came through the LOC.

In fact , Kashmir is now peaceful enough for Indian troops to start going to other trouble spots like the Naxal dominated areas or the borders with Bangladesh

Low turnout in Indian Kashmir's elections

People living in Indian-run Kashmir have had the chance to vote in the country's multi-phase elections.

But separatist leaders had called for a boycott and general strike. The streets, shops and businesses in the valley have been shut for two days and a curfew's being enforced in Srinagar.
