The cannons of LST (Landing Ship, Tank) Lesvos fire against the Turkish enclave of Paphos. The involvement of the ship in the clearance of the pocket was very important. The commander of the ship acting without any orders from his higher-ups sent some of his troops to attack two battalions of Turkish-Cypriot troops accompanied by bombardment from the ship's cannons. The commander then stopped communications with the rest of the forces and took an unorthodox route back to Greece by sailing close to Egypt's shores to avoid being detected. The Turkish air force in its attempt to attack the vanished ship mistakenly attacked the Turkish fleet instead, wrecking one Turkish destroyer and seriously damaging other two. The Turkish navy counter-attacked and shot down four Turkish aircrafts.

Interesting Pictures thx for sharing.

. . .
It was a militarily interesting conflict either way you look at it.

The Greek Cypriots had the T-34 which was an amazing tank, better than the German Panzer IV of WW2, but the problem was that WW2 was over 30 years before this conflict started... On the contrary the Turkish M47s and the M48s were not only much newer and much superior to the T-34s but they were also five times as many of them. And all that aside, the Greek Cypriot T-34s had aged engines that had to be changed and failed their operators many times during the conflict leading to even more casualties.

The Turkish air force absolutely dominated the skies at the time as the Greek air force did not take an active role in the conflict while the Greek Cypriots had no air force and limited Anti-Aircraft defenses.

Concerning the two sides' navies, the Greek Cypriot side had a very small navy while the Greek side only provided minor support (the main support was the Lesvos incident mentioned above where the commander acted without official orders). The Turkish navy again dominated the sea. Two torpedo boats sent to fight the Turkish flotilla were destroyed by a combination attack of the Turkish navy and air force. A third torpedo boat was captured by the Turkish side after it stuck in some shallow waters. Another four torpedo boats were left in their naval bases during the Attila 2 offensive where they were captured by the Turks who were closing in fast as they didn't have enough fuel to escape.
