JOYPURHAT, Nov 04: More than 40-year-old concrete bridge over the Shiholy canal in the Durgapur area under Kalai upazila of the district has turned into a death trap due to lack of repair work.
A good number locals said people including school-going children use the bridge daily taking risk as it may collapse any time. If steps are not taken immediately, terrible accident may occur.
Minor road accidents take place on the bridge area every day, said three-wheeler driver Lokman Hossain.
More than 1.0 million people of some 60 villages of Khelal and Kalai upazilas of Joypurhat and Dupchanchia and Shibganj upazilas of Bogura district use the bridge to transport their produce.
The truck drivers are afraid due to dilapidated condition of the bridge, said truck driver Masir Uddin. The farmers are forced to carry the goods using another 15-kilometre distant road to avoid any risk, he added.
During a recent visit in the area this correspondent found a big hole in the middle of the bridge. It causes untold suffering to the commuters, he was informed.
Trader Enamul Haque of Noyapara village said due to dilapidated condition of the bridge, it is hard for the growers to send their produce to large markets in the town to get good price. As a result, farmers are deprived of getting fair prices for their crops, he added.
Chairman of Udoypur union Wazed Ali said he has sent a request to construct a concrete bridge over the canal on immediate basis. The commuters, including students, are suffering for the dilapidated condition of the bridge, he added.
Upazila engineer of Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) Sirajul Islam said the slab of the bridge had collapsed.
The LGED will start repair work after getting the fund, he added.

It's not any useless thread. In this sub section we mostly discuss about important things in our country and social and political issues rather than defense related topic ( sticky threads are exceptions).

This news is very important. Such news attracts govt attention and govt take proper action. And he posted this news perhaps as a challenge of AL ranting about making Bangladesh like Canada, bla bla bla....... .

So before tagging moderators use your common sense and learn what we actually discuss in this sub section.

IMHO it's a good thread posted by @bluesky.

Yes, you are right to the point. I do not care if it is BAL or BNP I criticize the govt for not doing minimal things like this bridge all over the country when the PMO spokesman Kamal is talking big about a $16,000 per capita GDP in the unforeseeable 2041.

Kamal like idiots thinks BD will be awash with dollars by that time without industrializing and producing manufacturing goods in the country. However, Malaysian per capita at present is $9,945 with its manufacturing and oil/gas-based economy.

There is no doubt people from all over the world will come to Chapabaz Kamal's Golden Bangladesh in 2041 to seek low paying jobs that the affluent BD people would refrain from doing. But, Kamal should fix hundreds of broken bridges before the foreigners arrive.

Yes I agree with your message . And I also want railways all over the country, so that transport cost will be greatly reduced .

Agree , in this world we must need industrialization. It's true that we can not make everything , but we can make necessary things in our country , like trucks , locomotives etc etc .

This chapabaji will not last forever . When BNP will be forgotten totally , then other good parties will be raised to screw AL. Now peoples are silent for good reason . After all no sane person want Tareq Chora in power again !

Just let Khaleda Zia ask for parole from govt and BNP will be gone forever . If she does not beg for parole , she will be in prison forever , so it will also be the slow death of BNP !

As long as BNP will be dead completely , the fall of AL will start . Mark my words . Common peoples are now very much aware of the bloody politicians IMHO!

More than a decade ago, Badiakhali bridge on the Alai river in Gaibandha Sadar upazila was declared unfit for vehicular movement. But the bridge, connecting the Sadar with Phulchhari and Saghata upazilas, is still in use.

Ignoring the risk of serious accidents, no visible steps were taken over the years to replace the 65-meter-long ramshackle bridge with a new one either.

Damaged by freedom fighters to stop enemy movement on it during the Liberation War in 1971, a temporary Bailey bridge was built over the top of it after the country’s independence.

The narrow metal bridge has been in service since then and over time, shrubs and bushes grew on its sides. It has tilted at several spots and its concrete structure below is degenerating in many places, leaving scope for a catastrophic disaster.

Long tailbacks on both its sides are a common occurrence as larger vehicles have to take extra caution and cross it at a very slow pace.

Concerned citizens in the area alleged that although they anticipate a fatal incident any time, the authorities concerned did not pay heed to their repeated requests of building a new bridge on the Alai river.

The roads on both sides of the dilapidated bridge, built during the pre-independence era, remains congested almost all throughout the day due to slow movement of traffic on it, said Abdul Karim from Ramnather Bhita village in Sadar upazila.

Locals said the road between Gaibandha and Saghata was widened to 18 feet, but the state of the Badiakhali bridge remained the same.

After it was declared unfit in 2007, the army made several urgent repairs on the bridge and it has remained open ever since.

While speaking with this correspondent, Roads and Highways Department (RHD) Executive Engineer Asaduzzaman said the RHD has already completed tender process for the bridge with Tk 20 crore fund allocation and the construction work will begin in January.
