BAGHDAD, Iraq - Four American soldiers were killed in an explosion near their vehicle in volatile Diyala province, the U.S. military said Sunday.
The soldiers, all assigned to Task Force Lightning, died Saturday, the military said in a statement.
Another soldier was also wounded in the attack, and evacuated to a U.S. military hospital, it said.
The victimsââ¬â¢ names were withheld pending family notification.
Diyala lies northeast of Baghdad, and has seen a spike in attacks on U.S. and Iraqi forces since an increased push to pacify the Iraqi capital began two months ago.
At least 3,274 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. The figure includes seven military civilians.
