Cox’s Bazar, Apr 16 (UNB) – Four Bangladeshi fishermen were reportedly abducted by Myanmar's Border Guard Police (BGP) at gunpoint from the Naf River on Tuesday.

The fishermen are – Azim Ullah Majhi, Mohammad Abdullah, Abul Kalam and Mohammad Hasan of Shahparir Dwip in Teknaf upazila.

Border Guard Bangladesh has not confirmed the report but said it is looking into the matter.

“BGP members approached the fishing trawler on a speedboat and took away the fishermen at gunpoint,” said local union parishad member Fazlul Haq.

He said the concerned authorities have been informed.

The administration imposed a ban on fishing in the Teknaf’s Naf River on August 25, 2017, to prevent Rohingya intrusion and drug smuggling.

I don't think so. Media put the word of ''abduction'' not arrest. That means, burmese border guard sneaked into Bangladeshi side and abducted those fishermen. Most probably to extort money from them and to loot their belongings. Your junta govt. should increase the salary of your border guards from current starvation level. They looks very malnourished and engaged in such crimes to survive.

BD never admit that. that's why all ur gov can do is flag meeting as they do know their side is wrong. this is not a first time BD fishermen entered illegally. many times before this even some BGB. so u guys should feed ur people well so that they dont need to enter illegally other's terroritoy. I dont want to blame them. may be their hunger level reached at its max. just teach them not to enter next time. Myanmar should adopt strict border policy like india. Good Job BGP. !!!

A nation with only 1350 dollar per capita gdp should speak less about hunger. Look at your malnourished, short countryman and even armed forces members with sandals and should take care of them first.

But on point this criminal thugs not only abducted but also demanded 3 lakh taka as ransom.

Around 7:00am, a fisherman called him over mobile phone from Myanmar saying it that “some BGP members” abducted them and wanted Tk 3 lakh for their ransom, Aman Ullah claimed.

That’s a river and has a very narrow channel. These Myanmarese thugs do it quite often abducting people for ransom, send drugs through the naf river which is their main source of income.

For their livelihood and it was cover by Rohingya to enter Bangladesh and for BGP to smuggle drugs into Bangladesh. It’s a very narrow river. Crossing it takes minutes which is the main source of problem.

There is a whole ocean 5km away that is not banned. This river has been banned to fishing since 2017 they must've found other solutions by now for livelihood. They might've gotten greedy seeing lack of competition there.

The point is it still does not give justification to BGP thugs to abduct the 4 fisherman and ask 3 lakh taka ransom money.
