RAWALPINDI: In action to suspected retaliation from militants, the government has placed the country’s 36 airports on red alert.

According to sources, security of major airports, including Benazir Bhutto International Airport and Nur Khan Airbase, had been heightened on Tuesday but extra caution was extended to all the airports.

Though security had been beefed up at airports, passengers were being handled smoothly, a senior security official told Dawn.

He, however, said temporary passes for visitors had been cancelled while people entering airport premises were being subjected to questioning and search.
