New Delhi: Charlie Hebdo, a French satirical weekly magazine, has released a cartoon strongly critiquing India’s acute oxygen crisis amid the devastating second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.

Published on 28 April, the cartoon depicts Indians lying on the ground, gasping for oxygen. It also takes a dig at the multiple gods and goddesses in India, and how they have been unable to help the country’s plaguing oxygen crisis.

The accompanying catchphrase of the cartoon in French, reads: “33 million gods in India and not one capable of producing oxygen.”

The cartoon has been shared widely across Twitter to varying reactions. Some users have been offended by the inferences drawn, while others noted the truth to it.

They got exactly what they deserved. Karma is a Bitch. Instead of taking a principle stance on disrespecting other religion they jumped the boat because it was against Islam. My Eid just got better, French putting Indians to their place. lol!

Weren’t some Indians outraged by China comparing funeral pyres with rocket? I wonder what they think of this.
There is a difference between a cartoon drawn by a publication dedicated to that and an official account of a country.

Surprising that you are asking this question. You didn’t see any difference in between these two?
If there was no difference why was it taken off.

As far as cartoon goes, yes it is a funny one. Brings out the fact that we humans need to be realist and not blind in faith.

Personally I thought it was very bad taste for the Chinese police official account to post that image. It made very little sense to make the comparison and it is never good to belittle human suffering.

But would you still think that this cartoon is funny if some Chinese member on PDF drew it?

Very poor taste. Typical xenophobic french.

This thread needs to be removed.

Yep no one will get attacked, as they didn’t draw it in India.
Remember what happened to MF Hussain.

Husain was treated and forced into an exile because of what Gujral termed "the mob culture".And Harsh Goenka, a Mumbai-based industrialist, claims that forcing Husain into exile "is, in a way, showing the weakness of the system, that we cannot protect the rights of the citizen.
