Pham Gia Vinh, born in 1983, is now the Director of Dong Giang Vietnam Research & Development, one of the few companies making unmanned aircraft in Vietnam. He reveals his secret about the production of the aircraft as well as his aspiration for breakthroughs in the third test flight in April.

Completely made-in-Vietnam aircraft

Despite the fact that there are familiar equipment in the field of aviation and aeronautics, the 32-year-old director decided to invent a made-in-Vietnam flying machine with prominent features.

“We decided to produce a completely made-in-Vietnam spacecraft to affirm our technologies and prove that Vietnam is capable of exporting technologies,” said Vinh.

The idea of making a device that can fly three to five times higher than normal aircraft occurred to him in December 2013 and he started his job in 2014.

It took Vinh and his fellow workers only six months to make the 600-kilo device, which can fly at a height of 30 - 50 kilometers for a week.

In terms of technology, it is no easy task to invent and operate an unmanned flying machine at the height of 30 kilometers.

Vinh said the production of the machine is really complicated. First, graphics designers were free to imagine the spacecraft in their own way before agreeing on a miniature model. This model will be re-designed after test flights.

It took three months to complete the draft model. Then Vinh and his partners spent two months and a half creating the framework of the spacecraft at the Hanoi University of Technology. Such materials as carbon fibre and aluminium alloy were imported from foreign countries.

The electronic equipment and software were produced at the Dong Giang Vietnam Research & Development. The core of the software was made by Vinh himself.

Dr. Vu Quoc Huy from the Hanoi University of Technology said only a few countries in the world, including the US, France, Japan, Spain and India, possess technologies to develop flying instruments with a height of over 30 kilometers.

If Vietnam can manufacture such unmanned aircraft, it could make a big leap in the path to security and defence research, Dr. Huy stressed.

Prominent features

The biggest advantage of Vinh’s product is the ability to control its landing position. It has helped his company win in various international bidding projects.

Vinh’s machine is withdrawn exactly after test flights without using parachute as other products in the world.

Vinh said, “we can land the equipment exactly so it does not affect houses, people and other construction works on the ground”.

According to Vinh, it took much time to produce the framework. First, graphics engineers designed it with such software as ANSYS, CATIA, SOLID WORK. Then it was produced with CNC machine.

Flying to 30 kilometers for six hours

After two test flights, Pham Gia Vinh is looking forward to another successful test flight in April.

I hope that the third test flight will prove that Vietnam has mastered new technologies, said Vinh.

The third test is aimed at checking electronic equipment, as well as the framework and precision of landing.

Vinh also hopes that the machine will be able to fly at the height of 30 kilometers for six hours. It will record high-quality image and send to the central control station at a minimum distance of 150 kilometers. It is also able to connect with the satellite and maintain communication with the central control station from any distance.

If the third test flight records a success, Vinh will conduct the forth one in Australia in mid-May and send people to the universe.

One more thing, the genius made space craft, submarine and nobel prize winner Vietnamese. None of them has northern looks, this defeats Chinese delusional theory that northern mongoloid smarter than southern, though we do have northern mongoloid among us Viet.

The thing is people from Science and Technology Dept have too many ways to tackle your average citizens. Too many paper to fill, too many process to take, too much money spend on "lubrication". We have too many "paper scientists", yet they get stingy when "lesser academic people", aka farmers, non-govt organizations, etc, make somethings innovative or promising. They find all ways to obstruct, strike down or even steal the invention. Remember the first helicopter made by a farmer? 2 prototypes are still waiting to be "evaluated" since 2006. Or the father-son duo who came to Cambodia to upgraded Cambodians armored vehicles because VN didn't give them invention certificated for new type of tractor? Unless we can change that, I doubt VN can really have a burst of new, crazy and surprised inventions.

Once they are in power (get high position in University or a research lab), they will only look after themselves and their useless colleagues by restricting other potential researchers or make it almost impossible for these promising researchers to get support for their work.

In most university or research labs in other countries, they monitor the progress of the academics or researchers by looking at how many publications they have made. If they dont make any good progress or publications, then they will be replaced by someone more competence. In VN, a lot of “academics” and “scientists” abuse their power to suppress their rivals because they fear they may lose their jobs or academic position. And when they have this kind of power, they don’t need to care much about producing publications and results like the academics and scientists from other countries.

That’s why VN ranks extremely low in publishing academic articles in renowned journals.

Yes, billions are spent on huge projects with little or no practicality at all. They all sound cool and good (like clean water with micro filter, soil enrichment with bio-chemical combination or waste management systems using unharmful chemical, etc), yet only a few can actually turn into reality. Most of the ideas are used to "protect" their papers, rather than contributing to the society. And those without papers are simply stripped away the right to "invent" anything. I use the word invent because those paper scientists love to say "oh but someone else already did that", "you just copied someone else", etc. Argh, I hat those people.

Not topping on rocket science or making spacecraft is not a shame, cuz most of the countries do not do it. some of ur guys always want to show u r special, capable, and without an exception, relate it with IQ, race.... You have too much to prove. BTW, the spacecraft mentioned about could either be one of human marvels, or just a project designed in one month by several senior yr undergraduate students for graduation, the information released is not enough to prove what it is.

But when they get to the higher education level, their potentials are wasted because of the game that some of these “scientists” and “professors” are playing.

The worst thing is all those funding are spent on writing more useless papers, not on turning those papers into more practical uses.

Also the procedure is the major obstacle, which really stop people even before starting inventing. Recently I got interested in electric cars and did some research on getting papers for designing a custom car (which can legally run on street). OMG, at least 20-30 steps, tons of papers involved, all of which combines will take roughly 3-4 years, without "lubrication". And the fee is almost 50% of the car already. It is a total turn-off to me :(.
