This can happen to forces. A slight turn and that in deep forest can have you at the mercy of a disciplined force which knows the area and has first shot advantage over you.

The patrol party inadvertently lost way and accidentally came close to NSCN HQ camp.
The 1997 ceasefire pact bans Indian security forces personnel from coming within 1 KM of designated NSCN camps.
On realizing it, patrol leader explained that to NSCN gunmen.

Assam Rifles team lost its way and inadvertently ventured close to the NSCN(IM) designated headquarters that goes by the name of ‘Camp Hebron’ which is also located in Peren district.

The officer leading the patrolling team explained to the Naga militants that they had lost their way and did not know that they had come close to the outfit’s headquarters. He tried to patiently reason with them.

According to the ceasefire agreement between the Government of India and the NSCN(IM) signed on August 1, 1997, Indian security forces cannot venture near any designated camp of the Naga outfit.

Nagaland is not a community of homogeneous people it is a heterogenous community consisting of various clans. A section consists of these rebels with an area around their jurisdiction. The total population of nagas is around 2.5-3 million in population afaik. Large population has settled under Indian banner after Shillong accords. Originally They demanded sovereignty under British rule and claimed they aren't part of British India. Now they've toned down their rhetoric and ask for autonomous rule under the Indian govt with an independent flag and constitution. There have been informal peace treaties in the past which reduced the number of clashes and have established zones where army cannot pass. The situation is at an impasse.
Now to your question why didn't both sides slaughter each other is due to no will to fight on both sides. The nagas don't necessarily want to pick a fight with the Indian govt and in the future may come with an agreement and integrate with the country and the govt is looking for a peaceful way out, there has been to and forth communication with various past governments.
It's not necessarily an do or die insurgency like in the past. Maoists and these rebels are still Indian citizens and there aren't skirmishes if there's an scope of solving the matter bilaterally through talks.
First of all these groups rose up due to the extreme neglect of north east by past central governments as it's so far away from what you can consider central India.

Its NOT the Indian Army operating there. Its the Assam Rifles.

Assam Rifles is like the BSF equivalent operating in the N.E. Same as the Indo-Tibetan force operating on the chinese border. BSF operate on the pakistani border.

Its a para-Military under the Home Ministry, not the Defense ministry. They are the equivalent of armed police.

Assam Rifle's is there to Patrol the Border, not patrol the state. That is the job of the State Police.

Naga army is armed representative of Naga people, not completely rightful nor wrong... Meanwhile Indian army defends borders of nagaland and other parts of North East international borders. Assam rifles maintains internal security in that region. And this was group of Assam Rifles. They did not keep their weapons down. A soldier knows that his weapon is his only defence, so he never seperates it from his body. When Assam rifles officer understood that they were lost in the dense forest area and entered Naga army's camp, they took a halt and officers on both sides discussed the matter. Naga army patrols the region alongside Assam rifles but they do have jurisdictions of their own and both sides respect that, or try to do so. And dear Pakis, there's already hell of problems in ur own house than to worry about your neighbor. People across India are donating to save lives on ur side because we still believe that, No state can survive on lines of religion and thus we are a secular nation. May the god that you believe in bless you and your failing economy. Pakistan is already much trouble for us, a failed Pakistan will be a migrane for India, so save urself and don't try to be a road block in our Rise.
