31% of Muslims in India live below poverty line: survey

NEW DELHI: According to a survey conducted by the National Council for Applied Economic Research (NCAER) and the University of Maryland of the US, the monthly income of nearly one-third of Muslims in India is less than Rs 550. Three out of every 10 Muslims lived below the poverty line and earned less than Rs 550 a month in 2004-05, the survey revealed. Even among the poor, urban Muslims were better off compared to those in villages, who survived on Rs 338 a month during the year under review, NCAER said last week. app

Well, since quite a few Pakistani members keep arguing that 80% of India is poor, I would have to say that Muslims according to that opinion are doing better than the rest.

On a more serious note, this actually seems to be better than the national average. So much for them being left behind theory.

Although a little old (2006) but still brilliantly lit and relevant about Muslims of India. Particularly for those who want to have shut eyes to FACTS and BIG open mouth for PROPAGANDA about Muslims well-bieng in INDIA.

Considering that about 35% of Indian population is below poverty level.(I came across it on PDF), Muslims are infact doing better than the average population.

Is the comparison of Indian Muslims to the rest of the population apples to apples? i.e. is the poverty line that is used to determine poverty rate for Indian Muslims the same as the poverty line used to determine poverty rate for the whole of India?

The way you are dishonoring your country on an international forum, it is shameful. Unfortunately freaks like you catch more attention and make life difficult for others. May God bless you with brains.
Take care, may you find peace.

Did you care to read even a single reply from me in this thread?

Most probably NOT!

Blindly following the propaganda system is NOT PATRIOTISM my dear brother.

OPEN YOUR HEART AND MIND TO FACTS!

Dear Sir, I am open to facts. I am not claiming that things are perfectly fine. Yes there are problems, but is there only a negative side to the issue? Do you feel Muslims have recieved nothing but discrimination and hate, nothing else? don't you think Musims have a huge political voice?
I really doubt that you dont. But to a third person, who is not from our country, things might otherwise. I just feel, the platform you chose to discuss these issues was not ideal. If I have offended you, I seek your forgiveness.
Jai hind.

31% of about 130 million muslims in india means roughly 40 million below poverty line..
but according to this the figure in pakistan is 62 million
62 million people fall below poverty line | Pakistan | News | Newspaper | Daily | English | Online

KARACHI - The 62 million population of country has fallen below poverty line in FY09.
The State Bank of Pakistan in its annual report of economy of the county for last fiscal unveiled that World Bank’s task force on food security has estimated that the Head Count Ratio (HCR) regarding poverty increased in Pakistan to 33.8 per cent in FY08 and 36.1 per cent in FY09, indicating that 62 million population of the country might have fallen below poverty line in FY09.
SBP quoting the interim report of the Panel of Economists constituted by the government and Planning Commission, pointed out that as many as 10 million more people were expected to fall into the poverty trap. The interim report ‘Economic Stabilisation with a Human Face’ states that headcount ratio in the country may have risen by 3.5 percentage points in FY08 from 22.3 percent in FY06. Going ahead, a further rise is expected in FY09 by additional 2.7 percentage points. This brings the headcount ratio figures in the country at 28.5 per cent in FY09, SBP maintains.
The central bank pointed out that recent data suggests that between 2005 and 2009, more than 12 to 14 million people are expected to have slipped into poverty. Considering these figures, it is estimated that poverty may have risen between 30 to 35pc in FY09. SBP predicted that the global economic crisis, decline in manufacturing sector in the country and closure of industries due to power crisis is likely to push more people in poverty.
