30-MAF water worth $60b flows into sea

Associated Press of Pakistan

LAHORE: Pakistan Water Policy Forum (PWPF) has underlined the need for fixing priorities of power generation projects keeping in view all aspects instead of taking decisions on the basis of political expediencies.

"Matter of power generation from coal must be handled with care as China has already tasted acid rain that damages its 30 percent agricultural crops due to spewing of sulphur in the atmosphere," said water experts at a press briefing organised by PWPF at a local hotel to 'disseminate information on Global warming and our rivers.'

DrMuhammad Yaqoob Bhatti Secretary of the forum said as a result of global warming glaciers are melting at an alarming rate adding "Himalayan glaciers are estimated to disappear in 20-30 years." He said Bhasha Dam planned to be built in the upper reaches of Indus would be totally dependant on glacier melt while by 2035 glacier water supply for the dam would be greatly reduced.

He was of the view that Kalabagh dam should be given priority over Bhasha dam as being located below Tarbela it will be fed by rain water.

He said power generated from hydel projects is much cheaper than energy produced from coal and imported fuel.

Ex-chairman Wapda, Tariq Hameed said in view of sedimentation of existing major water reservoirs of the country including Tarbela and Mangla dams and Chashma Barrage construction of big dams must be started without any further loss of time.

He dismissed apprehensions about safety of Bhasha dam and said, "thorough studies/investigation by experts have shown that it would be completely safe and there is no truth in assertions that it is located on fault line."

He said its engineering is complete and another plus point in favour of the reservoir is that rock has been found in the area which could be used for its construction.

However, he said, "It cannot be an alternative of Kalabagh dam."

He was of the view that process of construction of big dams should be started immediately and a number of major dams should be constructed one after the other as construction of a big reservoir 24 districts of the province expressed confidence for Amir Muqam and Mushtaq Ahmed Ghani.
