3 cops jump off train to nab suspect, land in hospital

PUNE: A valiant but hasty action by three constables from the Pune police to catch an undertrial after he jumped off a speeding train near Visapur in Karnataka proved costly as all the cops ended up in hospital with broken limbs, with one of them in the ICU. The suspect could not escape anyway because he too got seriously injured and lay motionless.

One of the constables, Shrinath Kamble (25), told TOI from his hospital bed here on Saturday that they did tell the TC to pull the chain soon after the prisoner jumped out of the speeding train just 15 minutes after it left the Visapur station, but did not wait for it to slow down fearing they would lose their jobs.

The constables - Hanumant Masal (27), Vikas Phule (23) and Kamble - were brought to Pune on Saturday morning and are undergoing treatment for fractures to the limbs and other injuries at Hardikar hospital, Shivajinagar. The suspect, Sidram Mangurale (36 ) of Akkalkot in Solapur district, is being treated in a Visapur hospital.

Mangurale, who is allegedly involved in two murder cases, attempted murder and theft in Visapur and Solapur , was lodged at the Yerawada jail.

The incident happened on November 10 when the policemen were escorting Mangurale back to Pune after producing him in a Visapur court.

The policemen had taken Mangurale into custody from the jail on November 9 to produce him before the court at Indi in Karnataka in a murder and a theft case the next day. They took him to the court at Indi the next day, but the judge was on leave. The suspect was then produced before the in-charge court in Visapur, about 50 km from Indi, which directed them to produce him at the Indi court on November 23.

The cops boarded the Bagalkot Express to return to Pune via Solapur at 4.30 pm on November 10.

Reserve police inspector Motichand Rathod of the Pune police headquarters told TOI that the cops took Mangurale to the toilet. Constable Kamble was armed with a gun, Phule was holding the handcuff and Masal stood behind, he said. "Kamble opened the toilet door, but Mangurale suddenly pushed him and kicked Phule, who lost control and fell on Masal. The suspect then immediately jumped off the running train near Aliabaugh village between 4.30 pm and 4.45 pm," he said.

"The injured policemen found Mangurale in a seriously injured condition," Rathod said.

Constabel Masal said the incident took place in a remote area where no help was available and an injured Kamble had to walk for nearly two hours to reach the main road, but he did not get any help from the passing vehicles.

"After waiting for another one-and-a-half hours, a motorcycle rider agreed to drop Kamble close to the Vilaspur police station. Kamble had to still walk for another oneand-a-half kilometres to reach the police station," he said.

"When Kamble sought help, the cops at the police station could not understand his language. Fortunately, a subinspector , who arrived at the police station later, understood what Kamble was saying and sent an ambulance to the spot. The ambulance driver , however, returned emptyhanded as he could not locate the spot. Kamble then accompanied the driver and the policemen as well as Mangurale were brought to hospital," Masal said.

Kamble said, "I raised an alarm after the incident and handed over my gun to head constable P T Kokane, head of the escorting team. I also requested the TC to pull the chain but jumped out immediately because I a thought we all would lose our jobs if the accused was not arrested."

"We were taken to the hospital at Visapur where we were given injections and first aid treatment. An MRI scan was conducted on Phule," Kamble added.

"Constable Phule is in the IC. His condition is reported to be critical," his uncle, Santosh Phule said at the hospital .

Masal and Kamble have received fractures on the legs and Phule suffered a fracture on the hand.

Kokane has registered a complaint against Mangurale with the Visapur railway police station under section 224 read with 511 (attempt to escape from custody) of the IPC.

Joint commissioner of police (law and order) Sanjeev Kumar Singhal said two policemen are required for one accused as per the police manual, but a special escort of four policemen were provided as Mangurale is involved in serious crimes.

Deputy commissioner of police (headquarters) Shirish Sardeshpande said the policemen risked their lives to nab the suspect and all logistic help was given to the cops after "we learned about the incident". The superintendent of police at Vijapur also provided help to the policemen, he added.

This has happened many times in tamil nadu...if the convict escapes then all the police personnel escorting him would be sacked immediately.....i know of cases where the escape convict is nabbed later and mysteriously dies in prison afterwards from "heart attack"
