The second span of the 6.15-km Padma bridge was installed at Jajira point of Shariatpur on Sunday morning.

The 3,140-ton span was placed between pear-38 and pear-39 around 8:30am.

A concerned official said that it would be possible to set up more than one span in every month.

Earlier on Saturday, the second span of the bridge could not be installed due to the depth and strong current in the river.

“The installation process of the 150 metres span has been started on Saturday morning. The floating crane carrying the 150-metre span weighing 3,140 tonnes could not reach the pillars for depth and strong current in the river,” said Faruque Hossain, surveyor of the project.

The work of Padma Multipurpose Bridge became visible with the installation of a 150-metre first span on the pillars 37 and 38 on September 30 last.

The construction work on the country's largest bridge started in December in 2015 and it is expected that the mega construction will be completed by December this year.

A total of 41 spans, each 150 metres long, will be installed on 42 concrete pillars of the 6.15-km bridge, according to UNB.

If it's only one or two span every month, wouldn't take way longer than the deadline? They only installed 2 spans and another 39 spans to go. So even if we are generous, it'll take at least 20 months more.

BAL maths always defied belief.... however still one must appreciate progress.

Just curious, was the Chinese characters on the crane somehow covered?

I do not think someone covered the Chinese characters. BD people find these characters attractive and I have seen used vans from Japan with them. The owners like them and do not want to cover these.

The estimate was given by the Chinese company. But there have been many complications considering this is a ferocious and ever changing river. So can't really fault China Major Bridge either. Just an engineering problem

Without Finalizing the detailed design, they started the construction. This is what happens when you overwrite Technical viability with Political Hot Air. (regardless of political parties something that we have been cursed with!)

Out of 42 piers (pillar) 19 or 20 have problems. Piles have not yet been driven in the problem piers.
