CHENNAI: Twenty-seven people, owing allegiance to two little known pro-Sri Lankan Tamils outfits, from Chennai, Coimbatore and Erode were arrested for attempting to burn the national flags of India and Sri Lanka.

Fifteen activists of the Tamil Desiya Viduthalai Iyakkam (Tamil Nationalist Liberation Movement) and Tamil Desa Poduvudamai Katchi (Tamil National Socialist Party) gathered in front of Shastri Bhavan here, which houses various Central government offices, including the passport office and tried to set the flags afire before they were arrested, police said.

Eight persons belonging to Tamil Nationalist Socialist Party were arrested at Coimbatore when they attempted to burn the Sri Lankan national flag near the district collectorate.

Police foiled the activists' attempt to burn the Sri Lankan and Indian flags at the Collectorate, as tight security has been put in place following prior information.

Police overpowered the activists who had a Sri Lankan flag dipped in kerosene and recovered it, besides an Indian Tricolour.

At Erode also, four persons belonging to the organisations were arrested for attempts to burn the flags.

In a press release, the outfits alleged that despite repeated pleas from Tamil Nadu to press Colombo for a ceasefire, the Government of India had not done enough to prevent the "killings" of Lankan Tamils.

The LTTE is a terrorist organization that needs to be defeated once and for all. India is doing all it can to help civilians obviously, but that's all it can and should do.

The LTTE when formed was not a terrorist organisation......with passage of time they took various wrong steps and became so......nowadays i feel they do no good to the tamils,they hold the tamils hostage for their own vested interest.......if they are so worried bout the tamils,why arent they surrendering? That wd cause less civilian death.....they have clearly forgotten the motive of their creation........btw what india is doing is right.......afterall the tamils involved are sri lankan citizens,and sri lanka sd solve their own internal matter.....thnx

SALEM: AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa came out in the open in favour of a separate "Tamil Eelam" (homeland for Tamils) in Sri Lanka, saying it alone would solve the decade-long ethnic strife in the island nation.

"Separate Tamil Eelam is the only solution. Sri Lanka will not ensure equal status to Tamils. If the AIADMK-led alliance is elected in all the 40 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, we will work for formation of separate Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka," she told an election meeting here.

She dismissed as a "drama" and an "eyewash" the visit of National Security Adviser M K Narayanan and foreign secretary Shivshankar Menon to Colombo as India's special envoys to press for cessation of hostilities, saying "nothing has happened since their visit."

Jayalalithaa says her reaction comes after watching a chilling account of civilian plight shot by Art of Living guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar from the war zone in Sri Lanka.

"Till now we thought there is a war going on. After seeing the DVD I came to know that it is different. Concentration camps are meant to traumatise Tamils. Sinhalese will never give rights to these people; they will treat Tamils as slaves. Only solution is separate Eelam cause. If AIADMK comes to power- we will fight for separate Eelam", the AIADMK chief said.

You seem to be echoing Karunanidhi's views on the matter.

I don't know what they were before, but they certainly became terrorists once they assassinated the Prime Minister of India and began to use suicide bombs to kill civilians.

Yes yes...we know all the 'innocent' tamils are shouting, holding demonstrations all over the world, because finally, after decades of suicide bombings and killings, or politicians and innocent bus riders, they are being routed, and the infamous Prabhakaran is about to be captured.

Let's see if Prabhakaran swallows the cyanide pill himself, as he loves to order his cadres to do.

Is she burning Indians flags? If she is I don't see it.

Its election season in any case, so expect all sorts of ploys to sway voters.

Tamil Elam is not a movement by 'fringe groups', it's a people's movement. The Tamils want equal rights in Sri Lanka and they are honorable in my eyes for fighting for it.

I don't know where you managed to obtain the views of "Bhartis" from, but let me tell you that even though most Indians are well aware of the plight of Sri Lankan Tamils, they do not support terrorists like the LTTE.
