23 Indians joined ISIS to fight in Iraq and Syria, 17 belong to southern states: Report | Zee News

Delhi: There may be 23 Indians in Iraq and Syria fighting for the terror group Islamic State, as per Indian intelligence agencies.

As per a report in CNN IBN, out of the 23 Indians who are in ISIS, 17 are from southern states.

Four belong to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, four are from Kerala, three from Tamil Nadu, four from Maharashtra, one from Jammu and Kashmir and one from Uttar Pradesh.

The report named them as follows - Abdul Qudus Turki (Bijapur), Md. Umar Subahan (Bangalore), Maulana Abdul Kadir Sultan Armar (Bhatkal), Faiz Masood (Bangalore), Md. Riyaz (Bhatkal), Shameel Yakub (Kodagu).

Others are named as - Zeba Farheen (Hyderabad), Talmeezur Rahaman (Guntur), Atif Ahmed khan (Hyderabad), Athif Vaseem Mohammad (Adilabad), Md. Rishal (Kannur), Md. Irfan Iqbal (Kannur), Huda Raheem (Kozhikode), Riyazur Rehman (Kozhikode), Md. Thayyib Shaik (Vellore), Md. Syed Abu Tahir (Karur) and Shakul Hameed (Chennai).

The above pattern indicates that the ISIS are targeting the southern states.

Meanwhile, six out of the 23 Indians who had joined the terror network are said to have died, while two have returned, as per reports.

On December 26, in a joint operation by Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad and Telangana Police, three youths from Hyderabad were arrested at the international airport in Nagpur while they were allegedly on their way to join the ISIS.

"We got information that the youth would be boarding the early morning flight from Nagpur to Srinagar," a senior ATS officer had told PTI.

They were residents of Humayun Nagar Gulshan Iqbal Colony in Hyderabad and were reported missing, he said.

Given India's 175 million Muslim population the number is really low.China which has a much lower Muslim population has over 300 fighters in ISIS.Even New Zealand has over 50.

Hundreds of Pakistanis are fighting on both sides in Syria:

Who knows if that number is correct though.....there may be lots more that we don't know about. I think they recruit over the internet - probably why so many southerners...plus the problem may get worse with the governments drive to take internet to every village!

The reason for this thread is to show to people that ISIS is becoming a global symbol for Nut jobs. Bangladesh, India, Pakistan need to crush this threat at its root rather than exploiting it against each other which i expect to see very soon in future. I have no ill intention here but i want to show it is as much problem for India and Bangladesh as for Pakistan.

I would give example of turkey who are trying to exploit them against Asad and as a result their own country is becoming unsafe.

How are some guys fighting 1000s of km away be a problem for India, Pakistan and Bangladesh?Infact this is good as this is leading to the exit of several radicalized people from our countries.

I think its safe to say that India would never ever ever ever ever use Islamic militants for anything other than maybe taking each other out..as in killing each other off. As a country I think we have done a lot of dumb things but this dumb thing we would not do ever! :what:

I bet France though of same thing when they got attacked in Paris. Pakistan already busted two of their Cells. Where there are Wahhabis there will be terrorism. Its not a full scale attack like Syria and Iraq but small contained operations of Individuals who are messed up in their heads.

There was a Shia scholar from Lucknow, who was in Iraq as a pilgrim ,joined the Local Shia Militia and fought ISIS for months, claimed to have killed several ISIS fighters while talking to Indian Media.

Then we have radical Sunnis from South, who joined IS,6 were killed. As long as they don't bring their violent Sectarian Bullshit in India, they are free to die in airstrikrs, for all we care.

The past few decades, Jihadi nonsense has gone unchecked in southern India. Some parts of Kerala are like mini Islamic states ideologically.

the statement is incorrect... isis won't specially be inducing south indians just like they won't be specially inducing kuwaitis.

"zee news" is trying to hide the problem.

exit??

these people are killing syrians and iraqis, in the most brutal ways.

and these reactionaries are not produced in vacuum but are products of anti-human and anti-progress elements in traditional south asian culture.

Given India's 175 million Muslim population the number is really low.China which has a much lower Muslim population has over 300 fighters in ISIS.Even New Zealand and Ireland have over 50 each.

numbers should never matter... just like we should not compare crime rates with other countries and declare triumphantly that india is as much crime-prone as other countries, we must also not compare fsa/isis recruits from india with other south asian countries.

The past few decades, Jihadi nonsense has gone unchecked in southern India. Some parts of Kerala are like mini Islamic states ideologically.

should we also not recognize that karnataka state in south india was considered the second laboratory of the sangh?? :)

and there is nothing islamic about the reactionary elements in the south.

@jamahir your thoughts plz...

it just occurred to me that the tendency of dakkani/south-indian young muslims in joining fsa/isis being more than those from other states, despite the deobandi ideology being from the northern uttar pradesh state, is because of a historical reason.

the indian communist/progressive movement, formally established in 1920, had its muslim members and supporters coming mainly from bengal, punjab, bombay and the northern regions... except for hyderabad[1][2] and what is now kerala, the muslims in the southern regions were mainly non-intellectuals with their time spent in being tradespeople, land owners and bureaucracy components during the british colonial period and after.

it is a tragedy that bangalore muslims despite having the great internationalist, tipu sultan, as part of their regional heritage fell away into obscurantism, reactionary ideology and ghetto mentality... yes, bangalore muslims do contribute to cosmopolitan urdu poetry but there is a dearth of them being in progressive political participation... it is no surprise that any visitor to bangalore would find most muslims there living as though they were under taliban rule... while bangalore's old-money and neo-rich muslims are cosmopolitan, it is the middle-class muslims there that have problems... india's only female muslim pilot, saraah hameed ahmed, faced problems in her banglore community[3]...
However, Saarah’s first battles were fought at home and within the community. She says that she still faces taunts from people who believe a girl’s only job is to get married and produce children.
“Fareed told me that I should consider myself lucky because most Muslim girls don’t even dream of flying. If he hadn’t convinced me, I might have made the blunder of killing Saarah’s dreams,” he says.

In 2007, when she was just 18, Saarah enrolled with a flying school in the US. “Those days most Muslim students were being denied US Visas. When she got the Visa without any trouble I saw it as a final message from God,” says the deeply religious Ahmed.
She also has a Women’s Day message for Muslim girls like herself: “Don’t fret over what the community thinks of you. And don’t let them kill your dreams.” And what is she planning on women’s day? “Fly, of course! My airline [Spicejet] is very keen that I fly on Women’s Day.”

when the muslims in the southern states organize/tolerate competitions in blind memorization and recital[4][5] of quran, without understanding what true islam really is[6] ( one strand in the long line of socialist thought ), it won't be surprising when their reactionary cultural background produces recruits for fsa and isis.

india should concentrate on not sending them in the first place and that will only happen by turning india 180 degree through socialist/progressive societal change... the first order of things is banning all reactionary movements and banning all parliamentary parties whose ideology is based on religion.

india hasn't had a renaissance since its inception.

.
Government is doing a pretty job till now, pragmatic approach appreciated.

.
Is it India's state policy to send extremist Muslim youth to fight for Daesh in Syria? They are volunteering themselves, don't they? Government can't keep an eye on them + other people need to support government with it...
