NEW DELHI/SRINAGAR: A total of 228 CRPF jawans committed suicide in the last seven years even as the government said Yoga has been made compulsory for all paramilitary forces, beginning this year.

"Yes, according to available data, 228 jawans of CRPF had committed suicide. The causative factors in most of the cases were found to be generally the personal and domestic problems, like marital discord, personal enmity, mental illness, depression etc.

"In few cases the same could be owing to the work related stress," Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju told Rajya Sabha in a written reply.

He was asked if these suicides in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), country's largest central armed police force, took place between 2008-2014.

The CRPF has close to 3-lakh personnel in its ranks. Rijiju added the Ministry has issued instructions to these forces including CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP, SSB and NSG to "incorporate Yoga as part of daily physical exercise in field formations."

"It would be appropriate to incorporate Yoga as a part of daily routine of paramilitary personnel. This will also help the paramilitary personnel to beat their stress, if any, and keep them physically as well as mentally better off," he said.

A CRPF jawan allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle in Sopore area of north Kashmir's Baramulla district today, police said.

Head Constable L R Thakrey, posted with C-company of 179th Battalion, was on sentry duty at Company headquarters at Chinkipora locality of Sopore, 55 kms from here, when he shot himself this morning, a police officer said.

He said the jawan was rushed to a hospital by his colleagues but was pronounced dead by the doctors.

The motive behind the extreme step was not known immediately, the officer said, adding, a case was registered and further investigations are on.

They hate their jobs. On the one side they have to shoot Bangladeshis and the other Pakistanis. Any Indian with that job description will become suicidal

its obvious when they kill innocent civilians on bordering areas then they end up suicide attempts

Yup, as I stated earlier. We Indians love Pakistanis and Bangladeshis to the extent that 0,01% of our CRPF personnel committed suicide out of the shame of having killed such a wonderfully pious and peaceful people

Who knows..perhaps they could be. If you want to find out, it's quite simple. All you have to do is run towards them with a gun and check whether they will run away from you. If they do, then they are cowards. If we don't hear from you again after you indicate that you will accept the challenge then they aren't. If you aren't willing to engage with them, then you are a coward. Yeah ?

It takes a lot of courage to take one's own life.

The stress is huge, pay is dismal and conditions are bad. Worse, there is little respect (called Central Police). Those from a good background end up being depressed.

sorry i disagree , only cowards commit suicide , even if a Pakistan Soldier has committed Suicide i would have call him a COWARD too ....
you dont need any strength to shoot your brain out .. this is disgusting and pathetic

How many Bangladeshis and how many Pakistanis they have killed so far ? From the report it appears that they are good at killing their own lot :pop:

Suicide is a permanent solution for a temporary problem ...There were reports of Indian soldiers comitting suicides during Kargil Op as well ...!

Tough working hours more then the scheduled duty and less amount of leave to be with family are the main reasons for these sad happenings. govt seriously needs to look into this

The famous lines, ''When the going gets tough, the tough get going''.......doesn't bode well here.
An Indian state minister from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party recently had this to say about the tragedy of Indian farmers.
Om Prakash Dhankar, the agriculture minister of Haryana state, said on Tuesday that: "According to Indian law, suicide is a crime. A person who commits suicide runs away from his responsibilities".

"Such people are cowards and the government cannot stand by such cowards, such criminals," Dhankar said, according to NDTV.
Wonder what the minister has to say about suicides in the Indian armed forces. !!!
