Fresh Doubles' Winners @ WTA Championship, 2013 Istanbul

ISTANBUL, Turkey - Hsieh Su-Wei (Right of the pic) and Peng Shuai became the first Asians ever to win the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships, winning the doubles title over Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.

Makarova and Vesnina had taken out No.1 seeds Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci in the semifinals, but the No.2-seeded Hsieh and Peng were just too good, coming out particularly strong - they stormed out to a 5-1 lead and, after Makarova and Vesnina closed to 5-4, broke Vesnina to clinch the set, 6-4.

The Russians came out swinging in the second set, going up 3-1, but Hsieh and Peng went on another run, reeling off six of the next eight games to close it out - breaking Vesnina to finish it, 64 75.

"The most important thing today was that she was doing her job at the baseline, and I was doing my job at the net," Hsieh said afterwards. "I don't think I can help a lot at the baseline so it was important that I was up at the net finishing the points. That was our game plan today and it really worked."

Hsieh and Peng won their ninth WTA doubles title together, having won one title in 2008 (Bali), three titles in 2009 (Sydney, Rome and Beijing) and five this year (Rome, Wimbledon, Cincinnati, Guangzhou and the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships). Additionally, they are now 9-0 in WTA doubles finals as a team - particularly noteworthy given they are only even with other partners (Hsieh 5-5, Peng 3-3).

Hsieh and Peng weren't just the first Asians to capture the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships doubles title, they were actually just the second and third Asian players to reach the doubles final at all - the first to do it was Japan's Ai Sugiyama, who was a runner-up twice (in 2003 and 2007).

"We really enjoyed playing together this year," Peng said. "We had a really good time together on the court - we fought sometimes, but it was still a lot of great memories, just the whole experience!"

So what's next for the reigning Wimbledon and TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships winners?

"We haven't really discussed yet," Hsieh said.

"Do we play together next year?" Peng said with a giggle.

"It depends on if we fight or not in the next two months!" Hsieh joked.

"We're just looking forward to some rest time now and then we'll train together," Peng added.

ISTANBUL, Turkey - It all seemed stacked against her - an exhausting semifinal victory the day before, an inspired opponent in the final - but like she has done time and time again, and again and again, Serena Williams found that extra gear right when she needed it, battling back from a set down to beat Li Na and win the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships for the fourth time in her career.

After a grinding 64 26 64 semifinal victory over Jelena Jankovic on Saturday, Williams talked about having hit a wall after the longest - and arguably best - season of her career. And during the early stages of the final against Li, it looked like she was still trying to break through that figurative wall.

The No.4-seeded Li was phenomenal in the first set - she blasted a huge crosscourt backhand to break for 2-1, then a picture perfect angled backhand return winner to break again for 4-1. She would never look back and showed off some of her newfound volleying skills on set point, coming into the net and hitting some fantastic volleys, winning the set on a missed backhand passing shot from Williams.

Li had 10 winners to eight unforced errors in the set. Williams, five winners to 10 unforced errors.

Williams was in trouble again in the first game of the second set, as Li brought up break points - having not even faced a break point in the first set, surely a set and a break would be somewhat of a trunk-slammer. But after a backhand winner to fight off one of the break points, Williams let out a huge 'come on' - to the delight of the fans, the 17-time Grand Slam champion and World No.1 had awoken.

The No.1-seeded Williams would race out to a 3-0 lead in the second set, and even though Li would get it back to 3-all, it never seemed like the momentum had fully shifted - and it hadn't, as Williams would then reel off the next nine games in a row to complete a runaway 26 63 60 championship victory.

Williams blasted a backhand winner down the line on match point - her 30th winner of the match.

An elated Williams spoke to Katrina Adams in her on-court interview right after the match.

"I don't know how I got through that one," Williams said. "I've just had a really long year, and I'm just really excited, honestly. I really didn't expect to get through this match today. Wow, thank God.

"I can't believe I won. I was so tired. Honestly, did I really win? Because she played so well."

The numbers keep piling up for Williams: she is the fourth player ever to win four or more titles at this event (after Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf); she is the oldest ever champion at this event (at 32 years and 1 month); she is the first player to win 11 WTA titles in a season since 1997 (when Martina Hingis won 12); and she has now won 32 of her last 34 matches against Top 5 players.

Most amazingly, she now has $12,385,572 in prize money for the year, shattering the all-time women's record set last year by Victoria Azarenka ($7,923,920). It's also the third-highest single season prize money total in tennis history, men's and women's - only Djokovic's 2011 and 2012 totals are higher.

"I'm just overjoyed, to be honest," Williams added. "It's really awesome. It's such a special moment. To finish the year No.1 in the world and win this title after 40 years of the WTA, it means even more."

BEIJING - World No. 9 Shanshan Feng produced a fairy-tale ending at the inaugural Reignwood LPGA Classic on Sunday by clinching her second LPGA Tour victory in front of her home crowd with an eagle on the 72nd hole.

The 24-year old Guangzhou golfer trailed No. 3 Stacy Lewis by one shot heading to the 18th hole on Sunday and used the two-shot swing to claim her first win of the 2013 season with a total score of 26-under 266, one shot better than Lewis. No. 1 Inbee Park sits in the third place.

"Well, when I was going to the final hole I was one down, and the last hole is a short par 5, which I thought Stacy was going for, which she didn't, so I was like, oh, maybe she's giving me a chance for playing off," said Feng. "I never thought I would just hit the second shot so close to the pin I made the eagle."

Feng made history last year when she captured the Wegmans LPGA Championship title, becoming the first Chinese golfer - male or female - to win a major championship.

"I would say I'm as happy as when I won the major last year," said Feng. "This is our first time to have an LPGA event in Beijing, so I really wanted to do well to make them look good. And I think I did a great job. I broke my low score for four rounds, and I think I gave all my best."

The inaugural Reignwood LPGA Classic is LPGA's first trip to the Chinese capital. In conjunction with the China Golf Association and the CLPGA, the Pine Valley Golf Club play host to 81 LPGA and CLPGA players who compete over 72 holes for a total prize money of 1.8 million U.S. dollars.

China's teenage golf prodigy predicts there is 'no limit' to what he can accomplish at Augusta

Chinese golf sensation Guan Tianlang says there's "no limit" to what he can achieve at next year's US Masters if he qualifies by retaining his Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship title this week.

The Guangzhou schoolboy sent shockwaves through the sport at Augusta National in April when, aged just 14 years, five months and 18 days, he became the youngest golfer to make the cut at a major tournament.

And Guan, who lifted the Silver Cup as the top amateur, believes the experience left him him better prepared for the second time around, should he again qualify by winning the Asian amateur title on home soil in Nanshan, starting on Thursday.

"I really hope I can play at the Masters next April and I will definitely try my best to go high up on the leaderboard," he said..

"As much as I would enjoy my second Masters experience, I hope I can make it to the weekend, win the low amateur again and, of course, go as far as I can. There is no limit on that."

Guan said he has ditched his belly putter - ahead of a ban on the clubs from 2016 - and has also been working on his strength and fitness to put distance on his shots.

He won the Asia-Pacific title by a single stroke in Thailand last November, holding his nerve to sink a crucial five-foot putt on the final hole.

Guan's prize - entry to the Masters - made him the youngest player in the history of the tournament, beating the record set by 16-year-old Italian Matteo Manassero in 2010.

Guan, who has no shortage of ambition, said he's aiming to become the first player to win golf's hallowed Grand Slam: all four majors in the same year.

Despite his slim build and lack of distance with the driver, he earned acclaim at Augusta by shooting rounds of 73, 75, 77 and 75 for 58th place.

And he attracted widespread sympathy when he was hit with a harsh penalty for slow play, although the youngster insists he harbors no ill-will towards the tournament referee.

"I respect and accept the decision," Guan said.

"It was actually a good experience, which also made me pay attention to speed when I play. However, I have always been comfortable with my routine and speed, I think it is all OK."

The youngster, who turns 15 on Friday, said his game is much improved after his fitness work and experiences this year.

Guan, who also made the cut at the Zurich Classic in April, said he has learned from the likes of Tiger Woods at the Masters, and also from playing on the PGA Tour.

In a measure of his burgeoning profile, Guan will take on world No 1 Woods and two-time major winner Rory McIlroy in a skills challenge at Mission Hills on Hainan Island on Oct 28.

"I think my distance has improved a bit because of my fitness training during the summer break," he said.

"It is not just about the game, but more importantly the experience and what I have learned from the top golfers at the best professional events."

This week Guan, who said he was feeling "great" with a conventional putter, can emulate Japan's Hideki Matsuyama, who won the Asian amateur title in 2010 and 2011.

And if he does earn another ticket to Augusta for the April 10-13 Masters, he said his experience would stand him in good stead.

"The understanding of the course and the tournament would definitely be helpful," Guan said of Augusta's par-72 layout, which this year measured 7,435 yards.

"However, the course is set up differently each year and it will still be very challenging.

"I don't think I would do anything different, just hopefully go there and play a couple of practice rounds to get to know the course."

But any plans to turn professional are firmly on hold, with the level-headed youngster insisting "it is not the time yet".

"Schoolwork and golf are both very important to me. I will think about the whole turning pro thing when I feel I am ready," he said.

China’s anthem was played in the Centennial Hall for the fifth time – for Yanmei Xiang, new world champion in women’s cat. 69 kg. Silver medal for Korean Ryo Un Hui and Belarusian Dina Sazanavets.

Xiang was already leading after the snatch – twenty-one-year-old Chinese was unrivalled, as she lifted 123 kg in her third attempt. The youngest participant, Ryo Un Hui from North Korea, was second with result of 119 kg. Third was world champion from Paris – Russian Oxana Slivenko (118 kg) – and fourth Sazanavets (116 kg).

In second part of this absorbing competition Xiang confirmed her supremacy. Her first attempt on 145 kg was enough for gold medal. She ordered then 148 kg and lifted it in her third try. Korean Ryo hold her postition, as she lifted 143 kg. Slivenko and Sazanavets were fighting for the lowest place on podium – Russian passed 140 kg in her second attempt, but then failed at 144 kg. Belarusian Sazanavets ordered 143 kg and her try was successful – it gave her second place in clean and jerk, third in total.

Silver medal for Russian Oleg Chen, bronze for Azerbaijani Firidun Guliyev, eight after snatch, who lifted 194 kg in the clean and jerk - it is a new youth world record - and assured lowest place on podium.

It was a truly absorbing competition. Liao was already leading after snatch, but only by body weight - Oleg Chen also lifted 160 kg. Kim Myong Hyok from North Korea was successful at 152 kg, which was enough for third place. Azerbaijani Guliyev passed 143 kg and he was eight. He began his pursuit in clean and jerk - firsty, he lifted 185 (same as Korean Hyok), but he had two more tries. Twenty-year-old Hsing-Chun Kuo won in the women’s category 58 kg. It was a surprising competition, as two major favourites missed three attempts in the clean and jerk. Silver medal for Ecuadorian Maria Alexandra Escobar Guerrero, bronze for Russian Elena Shadrina.

Deng Wei, favourite from China, lifted 108 kg in snatch and was leading by the bodyweight. Hsing-Chun Kuo was second, Escobar Guerrero third (103 kg) and Ri Jong Hwa from North Korea (also 103 kg) fourth. The Chinese and Korean started the clean and jerk with the weight of 133 kg (Deng) and 132 kg (Ri) – and quite surprisingly, they failed at all attempts. Meanwhile, Kuo lifted 132 kg and it lasted to win the competition. She attacked then 136 kg twice, but her tries were unsuccessful. Escobar and Shadrina – fifth after the snatch – reached 122 kg and assured the podium.

Pole Joanna Łochowska was sixth with a total of 207 kg, beating her best result by seven kilograms. She lifted in the clean and jerk 115 kg, her previous best was 108 kg.

Hsieh and Peng weren't just the first Asians to capture the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships doubles title, they were actually just the second and third Asian players to reach the doubles final at all - the first to do it was Japan's Ai Sugiyama, who was a runner-up twice (in 2003 and 2007).

"We really enjoyed playing together this year," Peng said. "We had a really good time together on the court - we fought sometimes, but it was still a lot of great memories, just the whole experience!"

So what's next for the reigning Wimbledon and TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships winners?

"We haven't really discussed yet," Hsieh said.

"Do we play together next year?" Peng said with a giggle.

"It depends on if we fight or not in the next two months!" Hsieh joked.

"We're just looking forward to some rest time now and then we'll train together," Peng added.

Tennis - The new women's world no. 1 doubles player Shuai Peng is through to the doubles semi-finals at the Qatar Total Open in Doha with partner Hsieh Su-Wei.

The second seeds defeated Klara Zakopalova and Monica Niculescu, 6-1 6-1 to move into the last four where they will met the Russian duo Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Nadia Petrova.

The Russians saved two matchpoints and won on their sixth matchpoint over fourth seeds Cara Black and Sania Mirza, 4-6 6-4 14-12.

In the other semi-final, top seed Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, who will lose their top-ranking to Peng on Monday, will meet third seeds Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik. Errani and Vinci defeated wildcards Jelena Jankovic and Alisa Kleybanova, 4-6 6-2 15-13 while Peschke and Srebotnik beat Alla Kudryavtseva and Anastasia Rodionova 7-5, 6-2.
