2012 Ends Tragically in Vietnam as War-Era Bomb Kills One Boy, Injures Two
Wed, 2 Jan 2013 04:22 GMT
2012 came to a sad end in Central Vietnam's Nghe An province when three boys hunting crabs encountered a war-era cluster bomb and, thinking it harmless, threw it into a nearby drainage ditch.

"The explosion of pellets knocked the boys down immediately," said Tran Hong Chi of the US-based non-governmental organization, Clear Path International. "They were severely injured and rushed to the hospital. Sadly, Le Van Thang, one of the younger boys, died of his injuries the next day."

Le Van Thang was 12 years old. The other two boys, Duong Van Long, 15, and Le Van Loc, 12, were both badly hurt but are expected to recover.

"We will meet with the families and give our assistance to help with medical bills and make sure the boys receive proper treatment as well as any necessary ongoing support," said Chi.

For the family who lost their son, Clear Path will provide support to help with expenses related to his treatment and funeral expenses.

Accidents involving ordnance are all too prevalent in Vietnam. Just weeks before this incident, four children were killed by a decades-old mortar round in Southern Vietnam. During the Vietnam war, the United States dropped millions of tons of ordnance on Vietnam with an estimated 8-9 million tons still remaining in the soil.

:-( Sad that the legacy of the war is still with us. It will probably take multiple generation to heal it from it all. With the current territory spat and the US moving back in the region, it is like it was all for nothing. 3 millions died in vain. The US should pay damages for all the countries and people they have destroyed.

UXOs are one of the most cruel reminders of war, they continue to take casualties decades after the conflict has ended!

When I read this article, I think about Darwin Survival of the Fittest.

Vietnam needs billions of USD for landmine clearance
VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnam needs over US$10 billion to clear the huge volume of landmines and unexploded ordnances that pollute more than 20 percent of the country’s area, said Deputy PM Nguyen Thien Nhan.

I always loved the Vietnamese Steel helmet :smitten:. What's it called again?
It's called: Mũ Cối (Mu coi), infact, it's made by plywood, covered with cloth. We're poor, so we don't have enough money to equip all soldiers with Steel helmet :D

You sure I always thought it's made of Steel:what:

Chinese became stablize their formation. They knew we were outnumbered, so they started to attack. They shouted “Ta khoai, ta khoai” (Chinese: move quickly), the sound liked a crowded market.
We fired back and retreated. We had to rush, cos Chinese was moving to block our road. If they could do that, we would be killed one by one. We ran under, they ran on the side of moutain. That situation was very much alike American Action films. I, Luyen, Tao and 2 men stayed behind, to support others retreat. They gave us their weapons, so I didn’t worry about lacking rounds. Tao threw his AK, held a RPK fired without aiming target. Luyen used his AK and a M-79. I used my AKM and B-41 (VN called RPG-7 as B-41). We fought Chinese in 1 hour. Luyen was hit in his arm. My “steel pot” was crush, I did not know when I was hit. How lucky I was, without my “steel pot”, my head would be broken…

Steel helmet is expensive, we don't have enough money to equip for all, so, our soldiers must fight fiercely in order to win and to survive too, no choice.

PLA develops new non-metal bulletproof helmet

english.chinamil.com.cn 2005-05-18

"Bang!" A special bullet shot a helmet at high speed, but only left a shallow pit in the green helmet. Charge quantity of the bullet was increased again and again, however, the bullet cannot puncture the helmet at the time.

It is a test made in a laboratory and the QGF03-type helmet on test was developed by the PLA recently. Then, a same test was made on the PASGT-type helmet used by the U.S. Army at present. After the gun sound, the shot hole in the helmet proved that the Chinese helmet outperformed the U.S. helmet undoubtedly.

It is Mr. Zhou Guotai, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and director of the Quartermaster Equipment Research Institute under the General Logistical Department of the PLA, and his research team who had developed the helmet. They spent over 10 years on conducting statistics and analysis of the head types of Chinese officers and men, designing helmet types and hanging articles, selecting resin formulas, preparing film adhesive and determining technical parameters of layer pressure. They carried out plenty of researches and explorations, overcame many technical difficulties in the process of making helmets, and eventually developed the first generation of non-metal helmet, resulting in realizing the promotion of quality of the PLA bulletproof helmet research by large extents.

Bulletproof index, protection area and weight are three "key indexes" when measuring the quality of helmets. Of which, bulletproof index plays the critical role and determines the basic function of helmets. The V50 value is one of the key indexes, which can accurately reflect the bulletproof capability of helmets. The V50 value of the QGF03-type helmet is 630 m/s, surpassing the PASGT-type helmet (609 m/s) used by the U.S. Army at present. When being shot vertically by 54- type pistol and 51-type standard bullet from five meters away, the bulletproof rate of the QGF03-type helmet is 100%.

the current type of PLA helmet in service,it seems that it is not made of metal either.
头盔采用的防弹材料主要是尼龙增强树脂、玻璃纤维及芳纶,重量比过去轻了不少
