Two million Iranian pilgrims will go to Iraq to perform mourning rituals marking this year’s Arbaeen.

The Arbaeen mourning ceremony is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.

It marks the 40th day after the martyrdom anniversary of the grandson of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), Imam Hussein (AS).

Each year, pilgrims, mainly from Iraq and Iran, travel long routes on foot to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located.

Elsewhere in the press conference, Zolfaqari said the Iraqi government is responsible to ensure security of the pilgrims in the Arab country.

While Iraqis are scheduled to conduct aerial surveillance of some areas to ensure security, Iran will provide them with advisory assistance during the pilgrimage, he explained.

Last year, around 20 million pilgrims from all over the world gathered in Karbala to attend the mourning ceremonies marking Arbaeen.

I hope this boosts the Iran Iraq relationship. Good luck. Both countries share a lot and in history were under the persian empire other than assyria medes, parthians sassanids and Khwarezmia. Our nations are broken skeleton of what they used to be because of the British. I believe our countries should reunite.

Iraqi security forces have arrested a number of terrorists who had planned to attack the Arbaeen pilgrims, reported Iraqi news sources.
'Two of the terrorists who were seeking to attack the pilgrims in al-Dorh district in southern Baghdad were arrested on Friday,' said operation commander Brigadier General Saad Maan, IRNA reported.

One of the arrested terrorists was carrying a bomb, Maan said, adding that the arrests were made based on accurate information received by the security forces.

The Iraqi Interior Ministry spokesman also said that four other wanted terrorists were detained south to Baghdad in al-Karghool neighborhood.

He said that the arrested terrorist elements had planned attacks on Iraqi citizens.

Massive security measures are in place in Baghdad entrances and other parts of the country as millions of Shia Muslims are travelling to the Iraqi city of Karbala in Iraq to commemorate Arbaeen ritual, which marks the 40th day following the seventh-century martyrdom of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein (AS).
