My concern is whether it requires large amount of chemical fertilizer to grow. These type of fertilizers heavily damages the soil, requiring ever greater amount to grow the same amount of food.

The damage is to downstream rivers and wetlands due to nitrogen runoff. The soil itself is fine. The runoff issue can be greatly reduced with modern intelligent farming techniques.

If this kind of rice is planted in Pakistan this year, the damage caused by this flood will be much less.

I have higher hopes for "sea rice".
