In the first week of this month, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) opened technical bids from two engine houses, the starting point of a process to select a turboshaft engine for its in-development Light Utility Helicopter (LUH). The two contenders are Turbomeca offering the Ardiden 1H1/Shakti -- which powers HAL's Dhruv and Light Combat Helicopter -- and T800, manufactured by LHTEC, a joint venture of Rolls-Royce and Honeywell. Turbomeca's Shakti engine, which was to have powered the LUH (platform schematics), was dropped as a default choice following a reported fall-out between the company and HAL over license fees. The LUH is being developed to meet a requirement of 187 helicopters (126 for the Indian Army and 61 for the Indian Air Force).:undecided:

i don't see why we can't make a indigenous engine or at least one that requires consultancy from abroad the GTRE and BHEL should co develop an engine with consultancy from turbomeca and then BHEL could produce the helicopter engine.

.
Even though Shakti would have an advantage of commonality, I would like the Rolls Royce Engine to power LUH just to have more options at hand..French Company was acting real c*cky in this sector...

I have no idea why can't they sort out the licensing issue among themselves. Why do we still have to really on and export material when we have one. I think its time MOD beat there a**.

This is absolutely not acceptable. When we didn't had the technology we all were crying and now we have and its proven then why not use it.

It is one of the many wonders of democracy. Nothing will get done until it is discussed, argued, tried and tried and discussed again for 1000th times. :P

I am not sure mate if you are aware about HAL/Turbomeca Shakti engine. More info below

I would agree with you in case if Rolls Royce was giving complete TOT. No point to have another option if you don't know anything about it. Moreover, we have just developed this engine. We should use it as many helicopters as possible and then improve on the current technology.

Yap, I agree. That is how we work and let me assure you we always play right cards at the right time. I am sure we will choose shakti for LUH.

I think its better to have another techonology, I am sure we must be getting a TOT for this engine.

democracy is better than getting a bullet between the eyes for talking against the authoritarian gov't
