Article 1 is inviolable only as long as Articles 2 thru 5 are respected by Afghanistan and others.

For 10 yrs, the US tried to negotiate with Afghanistan regarding the harboring of Al-Qaeda organization.

Al-Qaeda was an interested party, meaning the organization was interested in waging a war against US. The US was also an interested party, meaning we would like the defend ourselves.

When Afghanistan allowed Osama bin Laden and Al-Qaeda freedom to come and go as they pleased, Afghanistan effectively cancelled Articles 2 thru 5. The reasoning here is if one side have the freedom to use the territory of a third party, the other side can claim the same freedom.

Why not? Very few Americans are killed now. The dead are "inferior" Afghans. America also sells weapons so they dont have problem with permanent wars...
