Composites within the scope of this workshop are referred to as engineered materials composed of two or more constituents – typically a matrix and a reinforcement being in the form of a fiber or a filler- to meet the requirements which cannot be otherwise fulfilled by one component alone. Composite materials have been extensively utilized in aerospace, marine, ground vehicles, wind turbines, and infrastructure applications due to the fact that they allow for significant weight and cost savings. The development of a durable and damage tolerant structural composites having outstanding mechanical performance with high strength or stiffness to weight ratio, and functional composites for above mentioned applications necessitates advancements in several fronts. Towards this end, the content of the workshop is organized such as to cover recent progress on a wide breadth of subjects because the composites industry and research is generally characterized by having a widespread scope, namely; fabrication of composites; product and processes of constituents; multifunctional composites; interface; rubber and clay composites; green composites; textile composites; nano-composites; materials and characterization; mechanics and micro-mechanics of composites; and numerical modeling and simulation of composites.

There were three special lectures, namely, “Self-sensing composites” by Prof. Akira Todoroki (Tokyo Institute of Technolgy), “Process and structural health monitoring of resin transfer molded composite structures by fiber bragg grating optic sensors” by Prof M. Yildiz (Sabanci University), and “Reliability design of polymeric composite material”, by Prof. Zenichiro Maekawa (Kyoto Institute of Technology) and more than seventy oral presentations by scientist and engineers of both countries as well as Germany, which focused on the above mentioned aspects of composite materials and their interrelationships. The workshop received near hundred participants. The event created a platform to initiate synergy and fruitful collaborations among the participants of both countries.

The workshop received several sponsorship by SABANCI UNIVERSITY, TAI, KORDSAGLOBAL, SIGMA-ALDRICH, and TECHEL. There were several Turkish and Japanese companies which opened stand during the TJC workshop and sent participants.
