What's new

1962: For anyone who haven't read this...

Still reading through what you gave me. Impression so far? Nehru was a complete f'ing moron.

Let's show some respect (yes even from me who is working on my "attitude"), and not solely "以成败论英雄" ... especially considering this old Kashmiri Pandit dispatched medical teams to China as early as 1938 during much worse times ...

I like visiting sinodefense forum too.

also go to tiexue

Cool! Are you a lurker or do you have an actual account in sinodefence?

There is this one noname who kinda just trolls the topics (definitely not you) and this other mysterious no_name that just popped up once. I sent him a message but he never answered. Was that you?

lol sounds like a helluva productive debate.
Yes, the debates there are very polarized. You are either a "patriot" or you are a traitor (a lot of level headed members get accused of being both quite frequently). Being patriotic apparently means randomly nuking random countries that intrude upon Chinese interests (Japan, the U.S., etc.). The Fengqing detractors aren't much better though since they sincerely believe that taking the "democracy pill" will magically solve all of China's problems and worship the Western military like its God. There are a lot of naive people on the forum. Although most fights go along the lines of "long live Chairman Mao's thoughts" and "stop YY you stupid Fengqing" there are some pretty clever/sarcastic changes from time to time. If you want to get a feel for just how creative Chinese insults could get you should definitely check out the comments section.

As I've stated before however there are still a lot of serious commenters on Tiexue. You can tell since they tend to avoid political discussions (not always successful due to the fact that someone usually starts mudslinging/baiting after the 3rd or 4th reply). There are purported former PLA soldiers too and you can usually check their credentials by the tone and knowledge of their posts. They are a lot more reserved about wars than the Fengqing and are more in line with the current government unless current social issues are brought up. They are VERY sympathetic towards the poor but are supportive of governmental policies.

I thought you have a "real job" ... how do you get the time on your hands? Some people sure can juggle and walk at the same time!

Like Siegecrossbow, I stick to PDF as it is pretty much my geopolitical/military news portal nowadays.

:pdf:

I'm graduate student. A very large part of it involves sitting in front of the computer. Gotta becareful that it doesn't distract me from my studies!

no_name was me. I lurked in that forum for a while but got frustrated of not being able to see attached pictures so decided to create an account.

Have to say that forum is more formal. I havn't check my profile so didn't know you sent me a message. I do notice that you have the same username, so does martian2. Alot of same people visits the same few forums, another I know of is new century china forum (a lurker not a member).

You have conservative Americans (one of them served aboard a U.S. Carrier in the past and is quite nice) and Chinese Fengqing coexisting pretty well. Check it out if you are interested.

I know who you are talking about. He also happens to be a respected member on another forum I lurk. I heard that he is a moderator on sinodefence? Anyhow, he posts many excellent USN pics and has posted outrageous stories of his days on different boats. FYI, during his career he never was deployed on a boat other than an aircraft carrier! BDPopeye FTW, right?

As far as economics and military affairs went, yes. But still, thanks to him, we are not Pakistan. After Patel's death, there was practically no one to keep him under leash and nothing stopped him from usurping power while maintaining a facade of democracy. The two corner stones of India - democracy and secularism, continue to thrive today, largely for his great efforts as PM.

That's right! Good old Bdpopeye! He is the bane of trolls on sinodefence and bans you whether you bash China, the U.S., or Antarctica without batting an eyelid!

Yeah it was so nice having a guy who actually served in the military on a defence forum for once. Besides posting USN pictures he also posts China Daily pictures (non-military) and updates a thread on Chinese actresses (recently got locked because some moron started posting **** on it). What other forum does he go to?

Hey guys I think I've derailed the topic enough. I think we should move the discussion on defence forums to the Daily read topic that Cardsharp posted.

Some of these 愤青 are so annoying.

It's strange, because there are a lot of Fenqing on the internet, yet I have met very few in real life.

They must be hiding their true opinions in their day-to-day lives. :azn:

I would be really angry if someone called me a 汉奸 to my face though, so maybe it's a good thing that I haven't met very many of them.

I've lurked at the worldaffairsboard as well. The China rising section is excellent. There are some very good China watchers there and even some Washington foreign affairs people there.

One of things I want to share from there is this post by Officer of Engineers (think he was a member here too) about what the 10 most important developments in the PLA.

If I have to list the top 10 military development, it would be (in no particular order)

1) Deng Xia Peng cutting off defence funds, forcing the PLA to get their heads out of Mao's butt hole.

2) The 1979 1st Sino-VN War which woke the PLA up,

3) The Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan which showed the PLA's reliance on terrain didn't really stand a chance.

4) The Kuwait War which showed just how far behind the Chinese were.

5) General Cao Gangchun, a combat experienced gunner in the 1984 2nd Sino-VN War, who had the clout to get money and the management skills needed not to waste it (well, not as much, this is an army after all).

6) Brigadization - litterally chopping the fat out of division and forming a single brigade out of the Hero Regiment (ie, the shock regiment) and getting rid of the other other two half *** regiments that were not up to par.

7) War Zone Campaign - the 1st real attempt at a cohesive military doctrine since the People's War garbage.

8) A Great deal of R&D and not afraid to make mistakes. The Light Mechanized Regiment is the example. I see a whole lot of mistakes being made but the Chinese are learning in what not to do - which is far more important than learning what to do.

9) A real combined arms thinking. Currently, the LMR is a single battle group, the 1st time I've seen such a formation in the PLA. The battle group concept dates back to the Wehrmacht during WWII.

10) Patience. General Cao has stated that he needed 20 years just to produce the officer corps needed for a true modernization effort.

Well to be honest, I have to put away my politics hat in real life as well. None of my friends and practically no one of my age is all that interested in politics, and I'm pretty sure I'd bore them to death, if I started talking international politics.

Fair point.

I guess I'm lucky then, that (some) of my friends enjoy talking about politics. :thinktank:
