192 in run for 50 Senate seats

ISLAMABAD: A total of 192 candidates from across the country have filed nomination papers with the Election Commission (EC) to contest the March 4 Senate elections for 50 seats being vacated next month.
According to EC, 98 candidates have filed nominations for general seats, 35 for seats reserved for women and 45 for seats reserved for technocrats/clerics. Another 34 candidates from FATA will also be in the run for four seats.
Only 11 candidates from Sindhs ruling coalition partners the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement are contesting the polls from the province for 11 seats, 7 general and two each reserved for women and technocrats/clerics.
A total of 24 candidates have filed their nomination papers from NWFP for 11 vacant seats seven general and two each for technocrats and women.
According to the schedule released by EC, the commission will scrutinise the nomination papers from February 14 to February 15 returning officers will not take a day off on Sunday. Appeals against rejected nominations could be filed by February 17, while the commission will dispose of all the appeals on February 19 and 20.
EC has fixed February 21 as last date for the withdrawal of candidatures a day before the publication of the final list of contesting candidates, February 22.
The halls of the National Assembly and the four provincial assemblies will be declared polling stations for 2 federal capital and 11 provincial seats. Meanwhile, 12 MNAs from FATA will elect their four senators during the polls to be held in the Senate hall.
