According to a Gallup Pakistan National Survey conducted in the year 2006 (10 years ago) respondents were asked, “Some people consider India as Pakistan’s enemy, while others believe it is Pakistan’s friend. What is your opinion?” To this, 20% said friend of Pakistan, 60% said enemy of Pakistan, while 20% said a competitor of Pakistan.

Comparative Picture: The question was asked again in 2016 to enable a concrete comparison. In 2016, 9% said friend of Pakistan, 79% said enemy of Pakistan, while 12% said a competitor of Pakistan.

According to public opinion, there has been an 11% decrease in the proportion of Pakistanis who believe India is a friend of Pakistan, a 19% increase in the proportion of Pakistanis who believe India is an enemy of Pakistan and an 8% decrease in the proportion of Pakistanis who believe India is a competitor of Pakistan.

India: Competitor of Pakistan?

Of the 12% who believe India is a competitor of Pakistan, 10% are males and 14% are females; 9% reside in rural area, 18% in urban area. Provincially, 13% are residents of Punjab, 17% Sindh, 1% KPK and 3% Balochistan.

This press release has been made as part of the Gallup Pakistan History Project which aims to release historical empirical polling data to wider audiences. The objective is to sustain and encourage empirical decision making in Pakistan.

It depends on how the question is asked.

An average joe would regard "not an enemy" equals to "india is friend" statement.

Nobody in Pakistan considers india to be a "friend" of Pakistan in literal meaning of the term.

They can mock us about being having millions of poor but they don't know we uplifted200 million from poverty in 10 years more than their entire population.
We are already way to above them in terms of overall gdp might it be uneven.in another 20-30 years they won't be even far far away from us.
