As the 17th Dubai International Quran Awards (DIHQA) enters the final leg, the contest for the coveted prize heats up with several memorable performances vying for the top spot.

Several contenders have staked claims for the Dh250,000 annual prize including Nafi Al Issafi, 19, from Netherlands, who recited in warsh style, and did reasonably well.

Iran’s 13-year-old contestant, Milad Ali Reza, mesmerised the audience in a soulful rendition, in a style similar to legendary Abdul Basit from Egypt.

Among the top performers is also Ahmad Bahir Harir, 20, from Afghanistan, who gave a simple but impeccable performance.

But it is Ethiopia’s Misbah Sani Abdela, 17, who has been most impressive among the performers in the last couple of nights, making listeners feel every word with his soulful rendition.

“Over the last 17 years DIHQA has emerged as the leading light in celebrating the beauty of Quran and bringing together experts and students of Quran in one platform and facilitating interactions among them which has lead to great development in the field,” said Dr Saeed Hareb, Vice Chairman of the DIHQA Organising Committee.

He pointed out that DIHQA developed from a small institution and established itself into a flourishing enterprise with several initiatives under its umbrella.

“We now have separate contests for prisoners, elderly people and several national contests. DIHQA as an institution is a role model for other organisations working in the same field,” added Hareb.

From next year the awards will move to a new dedicated building in Al Mamzar built at a cost of Dh60 million under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The move to the building will see further expansion of the programme, with the inclusion of a Quran contest for women as well as hosting of regular Quran exhibitions all year long.

This year’s contest has seen around 90 participants and the contests will culminate on Ramadan 20 with the announcement of the Islamic Personality of the Year Award.

Al Azhar Grand Mufti named Islamic Personality of the Year

Prestigious annual prize to be awarded to Al Azhar Grand Mufti at closing ceremony

Shaikh Ahmad Mohammad Al Tayyeb, Grand Mufti of Al Azhar University, largely regarded as Islam’s highest seat of learning, is the Islamic Personality of the Year 2013, Dubai International Holy Quran Award’s (DIHQA) organising committee has announced.

The Dh1 million prize, part of the annual programme including Quran contests and lectures that takes place every Ramadan, will be awarded at a grand ceremony on Ramadan 20(July 29, 2013) that will also see the announcement of the Quran contest winner.

The prestigious annual award has been conferred on eminent Islamic personalities and institutions over the last 17 years, including the likes of Shaikh Mohammad Al Shirawi, Moulana Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi, Shaikh Yousuf Al Qaradawi, as well as Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan and President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The award is not confined to personalities who spend their lifetime in the service of Islam and Quran, but is also conferred on institutions that help spread the message of Islam. The two famous institutions awarded so far are Al Azhar University and King Fahd Holy Quran Printing Complex in Saudi Arabia.

However, this is the first time a sitting head of Al Azhar University is being awarded.

Al Tayyeb was appointed the Grand Imam of Al Azhar in 2010 by the then president of Egypt Hosni Mubarak, following the death of his predecessor Shaikh Mohammad Tantawi.

The 67-year-old former Grand Mufti of Egypt, who holds a doctorate from Al Azhar University and a Phd in Islamic Philosophy from Paris-Sorbonne University, has been president of Al Azhar University since 2003.

“I feel infinite pleasure in announcing the name of Shaikh Ahmad Al Tayyeb, Grand Imam of Al Azhar, as the Islamic Personality of Year for the 17th session of the Dubai International Holy Quran Award,” said Ebrahim Bu Melha, Head of DIHQA’s Organising Committee, and cultural adviser to His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

He said that the award looks to honour personalities and institutions with a history of great service to Quran, Islam and Muslims in general.

“Shaikh Al Tayyeb has rendered his life in the service of Islam even before he was appointed the Grand Imam of Al Azhar. His service in the field of Islamic sciences has been phenomenal,” said Bu Melha, announcing the prize.

Last year the award went to famous American Islamic preacher Shaikh Yousuf Estes.

Ahmad Mohammad Al Tayyeb, the Grand Mufti of Al Azhar, was born in 1946 in Qena, Egypt. He was appointed the Grand Imam of Al Azhar Mosque after the death of his predecessor Mohammad Syed Tantawi in March 2010. An eminent scholar, he has held several important religious positions before taking the top job. He was Egypt’s Grand Mufti between 2002 and 2003 and held the presidency of Al Azhar university for seven years from 2003. An Islamic academic of repute, he has served as the dean of the Faculty of Islamic Studies in Aswan, and headed the theology faculty of the International Islamic University in Pakistan. He has also taught in universities in UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Al Tayyeb holds a doctorate from Al Azhar University and a Phd in Philosophy from Paris-Sorbonne University.

Mentally challenged Iraq man can read Quran in reverse

Mentally challenged Hussain Adnan Sabri is guest at Dubai International Quran Awards

He is a man with a mental age of a three-year-old, he can’t count properly from one to ten, can’t write, has only limited reading ability and can’t locate his house if he is lost in the street.

Basically, he is a man who has limited ability when it comes to everyday life. In other words he could well be termed a mentally challenged or disabled individual. But when it comes to the Quran, he is just differently-abled.

Meet Hussain Adnan Sabri, 29, from Iraq, whose remarkable knowledge of the Quran, every chapter, word and verse, is miraculous, to say the least.

Displaying his prodigious talent to a visibly stunned audience, Sabri performed as a guest participant at the Dubai International Quran Awards on Monday night.

He can read the Quran in reverse, knows every verse of the Quran by its number and can point out the first and last verses of every page of the Quran.

“This is a special ability which is difficult to achieve even for a normal individual and, considering his cognitive limitations, it is nothing short of a miracle. It’s a certain gift from Allah,” said Sherzad Abdul Rahman, an eminent scholar and imam of Masjid Hassan Al Shaikh and a presenter at Sharjah TV.

Presenting Sabri to the audience at DIHQA, Abdul Rahman subjected him to a series of testing questions about the Quran, which he answered with ease, much to the amazement of a packed house at the Dubai Chamber of Commerce.

Not only does he remember verses of the Quran by number and page, Sabri can even point to the location of any given word in the Quran with its full details.

“What is more astonishing is the fact that he can even list words in Quran related to any particular root and tell you where the words are located, which only very highly learned scholars can do,” Abdul Rahman said.

Incredible as it may sound, the genius from Fallujah hasn’t learnt the Quran from any teacher. In fact, if you believe his uncle, he never learnt to read or write beyond the Arabic alphabet, yet he reads the Quran with such proficiency that he completes the book twice every day.

“He reads the entire Quran in five hours, it is something unbelievable for a common man. When you see him reading you would feel he is just mumbling and moving his fingers through the verses randomly, but if you stop him suddenly and ask what he is reading he will point to the exact word,” stated an impressed Abdul Rahman.

His uncle, Emad Shakir Al Abdali, who accompanied Sabri to Dubai, says his nephew has been “abnormal since birth”.

“When he was born he was like dead meat. He didn’t cry, didn’t move and didn’t speak until he was four years old. His father consulted with several doctors and each one of them expressed his helplessness in finding a cure,” said Al Abdali, referring to Sabri’s early days.

Al Abdali says Sabri’s father, who has passed away, was a pious man and didn’t lose hope even though all the doctors gave up.

“He was a firm believer in Allah. As a practice he used to keep a copy of the Quran on Sabri’s chest every day and slowly it worked as Sabri showed signs of improvement. He uttered his first word at the age of four and that was Allahu Akbar [Allah is Great],” added Al Abdali.

Then began the miraculous journey as Sabri began reading the Quran on his own and at the age of five years six months he had memorised the entire Quran without any help from any teacher.

Passionate sermon about Prophet moves Dubai forum

Some members of audience in tears after hearing about sacrifices of the Prophet

The key to solving the myriad problems afflicting mankind today lies in following the example of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), an impassioned Dubai audience heard on Sunday.

Pakistani Islamic scholar Shaikh Tausif Ur Rehman Rashidi told the Ramadan Forum at Dubai World Trade Centre that humanity has “stooped to new lows” and its “salvation lies in reviving the example set by the Prophet”.

Thousands of residents, mostly from India and Pakistan, attended the free Urdu-language lecture titled “Who is Mohammad (PBUH)?”

“There is darkness, grief and killings all around us. Blood has become cheaper than water. Morality is nowhere to be seen. What is the solution to all this?” Rashidi said during the late-night presentation.

“It was Mohammad (PBUH) who brought light against darkness… Isn’t he a hero – the hero – who we should follow to save the day?”

Rashidi highlighted the Prophet’s efforts is fighting a variety of injustices, especially those targeting women.

“The pagans of Makkah used to bury their daughters alive. Today people carry out abortions of female babies saying they don’t want any more daughters – it is the same thing.

“Back then, they used to put up flags on buildings indicating the availability of prostitutes. Today there is also prostitution – and trafficking and murder of young girls.

“Mohammad, peace be upon him, stood up against all this. We need him again; we need the guidance of his example.”

Rashidi added that the Prophet strictly forbade harming women and children, in peace and war. He also encouraged fathers to care deeply for their daughters, saying Allah, the One God, would make such daughters serve as a shield from hell fire.

Rashidi said the Prophet repeatedly stressed to a man who asked him who deserves the best treatment: “Your mother, then your mother, then your mother! And then your father.” Islamic tradition holds that “paradise lies at the feet [service] of mothers.”

The Prophet was even kind-hearted to his enemies, added Rashidi, never taking revenge even when he gained the upper hand. “His nature was to forgive... He was known as Al Amin – the truthful and trustworthy – even before prophethood.”

Rashidi said Muslims are duty-bound to love and follow the Prophet and dispel the “false propaganda levelled against him in some sections of the Western media. O those who insulted him in your articles and cartoons, why didn’t you read about him, how he truly was!

“O Muslims, be sincere in your love for the Prophet. Please tell the world how great he was, explain to them his noble character and teachings.”

Rashidi has sought to propagate authentic Islam based on the Quran and the hadiths, or teachings of the Prophet. He is currently associated with the Islamic Dawah and Guiding Centre in the Saudi capital Riyadh.

Tuesday is the last day of this year’s Ramadan Forum, an annual event featuring a series of Islamic lectures in Arabic. This year it included foreign language lectures in English, Tagalog, Malayalam and Urdu.
