150 insurgents killed in Afghanistan, says NATO

KABUL: NATO-led troops have killed 150 insurgents in southeastern Afghanistan, an alliance statement said on Thursday.

The fighting on Wednesday night was concentrated in Bermal district of Paktika province, bordering Pakistan, the statement said.

The men, in two large groups, were monitored and tracked and then hit with air and ground fire in a series of engagements close to the border in the eastern province of Paktika, an ISAF statement said.

"Initial battle damage estimates indicate as many as 150 insurgents were killed," the statement said.

Earlier, NATO and Afghan troops clashed with suspected Taliban guerrillas in southern Afghanistan, killing nine militants, officials said Thursday.

The coalition forces also called in air strikes on Taliban positions during the clash in the village of Gereshk in southern Helmand province on Wednesday, said Ghulam Nabi Mulahkhail, a local police chief.

Among those killed was a local Taliban group commander identified as Mullah Faqir Mohammad, the police official said. One Afghan soldier was wounded and evacuated to a NATO medical facility, the alliance said in a statement.

With such a Zealous and Fearless enemy are might of arms ever going to be enough?

Instead of doing all that cooperation, they demands "Do More" from us:wall:

I refer you to a comment I made in Keysersozes Basic training thread regarding the effective ability of Pak army troops in the WoT.

Due to the sheer level of sophisticated equipment supplied during the Soviet Invasion era the level of equipment is such that not even the Pakistan Army have such kit namely in communications such as satellite phones.

In a book I have called Al Qaeda by Jason Burke a photo shows a Pakistan Army soldier arresting a suspect in Waziristan. The Helmet he is wearing looks like the steel helmets issued to British soldiers during WW 2.

The militants were trained in Camps run by SSG or ISI instructors namely those of Hizb i Islami for Gulbuddin Hekmatyar to deal with the soviets so the level of training was high.

NATO, Pak Army strike militants

KABUL: In the biggest battle of the Afghan winter, NATO forces say they killed or severely wounded 130 insurgents who crossed over from Pakistan. Across the border, the Pakistan military, acting on intelligence provided by the US-led coalition, attacked supply trucks used by suspected insurgents for cross-border attacks, spokesman Maj Gen Shaukat Sultan said. He said it wasn’t clear if any militants were killed in the Pakistani assault. NATO tracked the militants through air surveillance while they were still in Pakistan. Once they crossed over to Paktika province, NATO and Afghan soldiers attacked them from ground and air during a nine-hour engagement that began on Wednesday evening. US military spokesman Lt Col Paul Fitzpatrick said 130 fighters were killed or wounded. The Afghan Defence Ministry estimated the toll at 80 dead.

A program in the UK called Dispatches showed a recently bombed mountain hideout of the Taleban.

They were still there in good numbers despite air strikes by US Aircraft

Also the point that the militants control the countryside was made clear as they were able to gather in large numbers 5 minutes from a British base in Helmand in broad daylight armed with GPMGs and RPGs.

Next to Arabs in Saudi Arabia the Pathan people of North West Frontier and Afghanistan are amongst the strictest observers of Islam. They take the notion that Allah is to be feared very seriously. Indeed they say that to show fear of anything else shows that their faith in Allah is not strong enough.

History speaks for itself regarding all attempts to conquer these people.

The smaller the force, the better you can equip it. This goes without saying. The communication gear can be of better quality since its not being bought in Army-wide quantities. The WW2 helmets are around, but mostly in use by the Paramilitary units and Khasadars. Having said that, the regular army's headgear is not very modern either.

This is the perfect challenge of having an Army of 500K and not being able to equip the troops with good equipment. The Indonesians tend to equip their soldiers with much better equipment in contrast even though they have been heavily sanctioned too. The difference is that they have a much smaller army and can spend more per-capita on the soldier.

Also keep in mind that many of the AQ types were/are engineers, techies and know what comm. equipment is good and suitable for the terrain where they will be operating. They can buy top of the line equipment since its for small units or probably buy the stuff individually in the west or Russia.

i am sorry that you keep reminding me about the fact that we have less to spend on amount we can spend on the individual soldier. You must be getting sick of it.

Can you tell me how much is available in Keysersozes Basic training thread in the army section where it would be more useful.
