ISLAMABAD, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- At least 13 people were killed when a U.S. drone launched three missile strikes in Orakzai region of Pakistan's northwest tribal belt on Wednesday, local media reported.

According to the report by local TV channel Geo, the attack was launched in wee hours in the morning when a U.S. drone fired three missiles at a militants'hideout in Darand Shekhan area of upper Orakzai agency, a militancy-hit tribal area where Pakistan army has been battling local and foreign Taliban militants for the past four months.

The report said that six foreigners were also among the killed militants and the dead bodies have been shifted to other areas of Orakzai after the drone attack.

In another attack which also happened on early Wednesday, Pakistan army killed 13 militants and destroyed five hideouts in the same area. Some media reports have said that this operation was carried out by a combination of Pakistani jets and U.S. drones.

Earlier on Tuesday, 10 soldiers were killed and 32 others injured in a check post attack by militants in neighboring Kurram Agency. Wednesday's operation against the militants might be retaliation by security forces.

Wednesday morning's drone strike came just one day after Foreign Office Spokesperson Abdul Basit stated that drone attacks are unacceptable to Pakistani government because they are unlawful and counterproductive.

This is the fourth strike of its kind in northwestern tribal area of Pakistan and the first of its kind in Orakzai agency since the beginning of 2012. To date, 27 people have been killed and several others injured in 11 missile strikes launched by U.S. drones.

I don't understand one thing all these militants are holed up in the NW part of Pakistan why can't the army mount a force of 60,000-100,000 soldiers together with attack helicopters and take care of these punks once and for all?

There must be say only 15,000 militants there and although they may be hard as nails and prepared to fight to the death will lack the sophisticated weapons that the PAK army will have and this together with some helicopter gunships and F16 can wipe them out.

Because Pakistan considers these as their assets and not terrorists..Thats why Pakistan is opposing NATO tooth and nail and preventing them from wiping these terrorists out.

Makes no sense though as these militants have attacked the Pakistan army not to mention it's cities.

You mean like they blend in with the civilian population during the day etc and at night come out the shadows? also spliting up in groups will make it harder to target them makes sense to me.

if they lay down guns or hide guns you even can't recognize them from civil . they grow with support of locals too .only targted operations work on them . even you send 1mn solders they will go control it but at night guerrilla or hide on mountains and firee on solders run and go sleep in there homes road side blasts your solders suicide attacks on you .a country like pakistan can't damn wast billions like nato isaf . and TBH tell me true yeti nato -US won in afghanistan ? there is no taliban left after trillions of $ and 11 years of full scale war ?

So what is the solution in your view to continue target operations as is the current policy? there must be some way of bringing them in line either through talks or like the british did the old fashioned divide and rule tactics so the groups splinter.

And that brings us to the distinction of good terrorists (attacking USA in Afg or India in Kashmir) and bad terrorists (attacking Pakistan). The oxymoron of good terrorist is what is preventing Pakistan from breaking out of the downward spiral of religious extremism

Former Taliban militants with gowns hold copies of Islam's holy book "Quran" which were given by Afghan officials during a joining ceremony with the Afghan government in Herat, west of Kabul, Afghanistan, Monday Jan. 30, 2012. Mullah Abdullah, not picturreed, a Taliban militant commander from Herat province joined with Afghan government along with his 30 militants under his command and handed over their weapons as part of a peace-reconciliation program.

Offtopic but just so that you know, Indian army does not face guerilla fighters in kashmir. It is usually in north east or east India(maoists).
