maybe you have comprehension problem, read my post again, Gurkhas wont join any other armies except brit and Indian armies. and I know definitions better than you do.

Are these Indian Gurkhas or those Nepalis that join the Indian and British Armies ? :what:

I will never understand how the Nepali Gurkhas can go ahead and join foreign armies and still be eulogized as anything more than mercenaries !
the Indian Army operates on a 60:40 ratio, i.e. 60 per cent intake from Nepal and 40 from India (some regiments go with a 70:30 ratio).

So they join the British Army because the British are predominantly Hindus and their brothers and they feel obliged to defend the Queen and the British Isle....? Yeah...I thought as much; if they didn't join the British Army because of fraternal or religious ties than they sure as hell didn't join the Indian Army for the same.

Come up with a better reason to rationalize away their mercenary pedigree and I might even buy it !

Joining brit army has been tradition of nepali gurkhas, its a matter of prestige for them. many nepali gurkhas who were not able to make it to the brit army have committed suicides in the past. nepali govt has barricaded that bridge near recruitment depot to prevent suicides. with India its fraternal and religious ties. besides they have been serving indian army for 200 years now.

I know...thats why they're MERCENARIES as choosing to serve in a foreign army by profession is called being a 'MERCENARY' !

They didn't join the Indian Army to help India win freedom in 1857 or join Subash Chandra Bose's Army - They joined the British Indian Army and then the Indian Army as a profession not out of idealistic pursuit like the Irish like Daniel O Leary and the British Legions fighting with Simon Bolivar for the independence of South America !

There is a helluva difference between the two.

the thing is they never break their oath, mercenaries are not loyal and work only for money while gurkhas are loyal to their core. its both idealism and profession.

So they're mercenaries who take pride in their profession and won't break their oath !

I still don't understand how a person, let alone, entire generations of people, could be willing to serve in the Army of a country thats not yours !

gurkhas serve the army of their homeland also, nepal is not without an army. In India and England they get better pay and opportunities. a Jawan in indian army get a salary of INR 30000 a month apart from many other allowances and facilities. I dont know about brit salary structure. btw I was thinking what is considered as a comfortable income in pakistan? just a question.

they are a legacy unit from the time of the British Raj, and because they're so good, the 'queen' wanted to retain some units, the rest were absorbed into the Indian army. They are fiercely loyal and take great pride in serving.. they are not 'mercenaries'.

One incentive I know is guaranteed vaccinations against disease western nations take for granted, at least for the ones in Britain.
