115,762 Pakistanis deported in 2 years, Bakhtiar tells NA
* Bosan says 4.5 percent agriculture growth target will be achieved

ISLAMABAD: Some 73,001 Pakistanis were deported from various countries in 2005-06 and 42,761 in 2006-07, while Pakistan arrested 528 international drug smugglers in the last three years, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Khusro Bakhtiar told the National Assembly (NA) in question hour on Thursday.
Bakhtiar said the Pakistani nationals had been deported from Nepal, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Iran, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Kenya, Senegal, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, UAE, Yemen, Morocco, Algeria, South Africa, Niger, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, the Philippines, New Zealand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia. He added that this information had been gathered from Pakistani missions abroad.
Bakhtiar said that 72 Pakistanis were imprisoned in Denmark on various charges, including narcotics and violence. âOur mission in Denmark has been making efforts to extend necessary legal aid to these Pakistani nationals to secure their release,â he added.
Narcotics Control Minister Ghaus Bux Khan Maher told the NA that Pakistan arrested 528 foreign drug pushers in the last three years â 219 in 2004, 146 in 2005 and 163 in 2006. He said the security forces also seized a huge quantity of contraband, including 5,000 kg of hashish, 940 kg of heroin and 25 kg of opium in these three years.
Unazza Ihsan, parliamentary secretary for womenâs development, told the NA that 41 cases of stove burning were reported from the four provinces from 2004 to 2006. She said the government was taking measures to control violence against women and provide them protection.
Ihsan said that burn centres had been set up in hospitals in major cities while more centres would soon be established at various towns.
Railways Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmad told the house that Pakistan Railways was being rehabilitated to turn it into a service-oriented and profitable organisation. He said that new passenger trains had been started between Karachi and Rawalpindi while efforts were underway to run express trains on this sector.
Food and Agriculture Minister Sikandar Hayat Bosan told the house that the government would achieve the target of 4.5 percent growth in production this year.
Answering a question, Bosan said the government was considering a proposal to launch a crop maximisation project to accelerate agricultural growth by economic uplifting of small and poor farmers in the country.
Minister of State for Health Shahnaz Sheikh told the NA that two rounds of a polio immunisation campaign had been conducted this year in which 32 million children had been immunised.
She said the government would take action to curb advertisements of spurious medicines.
