You're historically ingnorant. Romans didn't wipe out the Greeks. Byzantium was the Eastern Roman Empire. The amalgamation of Roman and Hellenic culture with Eastern Orthodox Christianity as the main religion. The majority of the population were Greeks who called themselves Romans,seeing themselves as the legal inheritors of the Roman Empire. Progressively,towards the latter Byzantine and medieval period,while they continued to call themselves Romans officially,they also started calling themselves Hellenes more often.The word stopped being a term for adherents of the Dodekatheon and had an ethnic meaning again.
