When Musharraf Ali died at the ripe old age of 108 at Sakras village in Baheri tehsil, his family had not imagined it possible that his politics would pose a hurdle in his burial. A panchayat was convened in the village and an announcement was made on a loudspeaker asking the man's neighbours to refrain from attending the funeral. The local Iman was instructed not to conduct the funerary rituals - all because Ali, in the recent gram Pradhan elections, had thrown his weight behind Asha Devi, whose husband is a local BJP leader.

Ali died late Monday and his family began making arrangements for the funeral. They also needed a cot on which the body could be carried to the graveyard. Ali's family found buying a cot and getting the plot for the grave was not going to be easy.

The family found members of their own community most uncooperative -- former gram pradhan Mohd Ayub Khan, in charge of the local mosque, told relatives of Ali that the grave could not be dug. He accused Ali and his family of betraying the community by supporting a Hindu candidate.

Mohammad Irshad, Ali's grandson, told TOI, "The local Imam too was warned against having any part in the funeral."

Ultimately, as the body could not be buried for over 20 hours, the family sought help from relatives in Baheri town. Some Hindus in the area too offered help.

On Tuesday, the family approached local police and the gram Pradhan, Asha Devi. With help from authorities and relatives elsewhere, and also some local Hindu families, the body was finally buried.
Local BJP leader Mahesh Gupta said, "My wife Asha Devi contested gram pradhan elections against Anisa Begum, wife of Mukhtar Ansari, and won by a handsome margin. Even some Muslim families had supported my wife. Ali was among my wife's supporters. That is why he was insulted like this, and the burial was delayed by a whole day."

Circle officer Pramod Yadav of Baheri said, "How could someone be denied a decent burial because of who he supported in the elections? How can politics be carried that far?"

We should throw pur support behind such people

If the story was the other way around and he was punished for supporting CONgress, it would be published in all the major news networks for a minimum of a week. And then there would be debates on intolerance and why someone who supports CONgress should not be given proper burial.

Intolerance after death ?? You cant even die in India without intolerence, let alone live in India ! Right Mr. Amir Khan ??

These ppl have lost their humanity and have become insane . They fail to give basic respect that other fellow humans deserve but expect the world to give all the privileges for them.

Just another tolerant muslim.

Its easy to incite religious hate than promote love. Any foreign power can do this When people are stupid democracy is a curse. It slows countrys output. We need to take democracy out temporarily untill people in masses become mature.
