Found an interesting diagram of local ethnic Chinese's ownership of South East Asia's economy (not sure if by GDP or assets) by country.

Ethnic Chinese migration to South-East Asia have been primarily during the late Qing dynasty with earliest records starting in the 13th century to Thailand. The distinction between Chinese and non-Chinese ethnic groups in south east asia becomes quite blury as 40% of Thai citizens are of at least partial Chinese decent.

It seems like to me the CCP and PLA's role in overseas ethnic Chinese affairs are changing from its historic role of strict non-intervension. In recent years strong emphasis on 国家利益走到哪，军队就要走到哪, which is heavily promoted in the media. It translates to: "Where ever national interests lies is where the military should be". Since China has national interests in many places in the world it doesn't mean China will have military bases everywhere but it means that China should have the ability to project military force into anywhere in the world to protect national interests like when Chinese nationals are in danger. This force projection will be specifically targeted in regions of instability and weak government since developed or stable nations can handle any situations by themselves (ex.New Zealand earthquake). This is exemplified by the evacuations of Chinese nationals along with nationals from any other country from Libya and Yemen. While the PLA in the future will still be non-interfering in other country's affairs it is increasingly willing to intervene for a specific situation. It would mean the Chinese military will take military action to protect its overseas nationals and will not ask for permission to do so.
