100 foot Chinese God statue covered after Muslims threaten to break down

Are you nuts? Two years in jail for not breaking any laws. Indonesian are intolerant and racist to Chinese because of their success.

They can immigrate to live else where and start a new life if they really want, why tormented themselves to live on unhappy land. I remember after 1979 war with Vietnam, a lot of ethnic Chinese face discrimination and left, they dumped their business and immigrate to Thailand, Honkong, Canada and elsewhere, when Vietnam government realized their economy was bad then they offer incentive package to get these people back but it was late, only few return but majority already start a new life on their new country.

Yep, we have always suspected that kind of behaviour. You just more or less confirmed the attitude of the PRC. I guess blood is thicker than wine doesnt apply to the average mindset mainland chinese (government). After all with 1,3 billion mainland chinese to care, what is a few thousands dead oversea chinese anyway? It is always Singapore and Taiwan who act on behalf of the oversea chinese in South East Asia when the local ethnic chinese is being targeted for pogrom. What a shame, fortunately the younger oversea chinese are waking up to the reality and must not rely on PRC for anything and vice versa, PRC shouldnt count on us for help either. Thats a Quid pro quo attitude we should embrace and no more ambiguity.

Good, I hope they will move to the ROC then, the ROC loves foreigners. Unfortunately for them, the ROC is unlikely to survive the next decade. That's about how long China's strategic patience will last.

It doesn't matter if he broke any laws or not (he didn't). What matters is the Indonesian Muslims believe he committed blasphemy, which means he is dead. Just as dead as the people working in Charlie Hebdo in France, except with a lesser chance of survival, considering that Indonesia is a Muslim majority country, unlike France.

Being in prison for 2 years, has saved his life for 2 years. He won't even make it walking down the street in Indonesia after that. If he is smart he will run for his life after he is released. And never go to sleep without multiple armed guards at all times. Or he will end up like Theo van Gogh in the Netherlands, or the countless others who have been killed for blasphemy.

Com'on man, most of the people here call overseas Chinese who even appear to harm Chinese interests as Hanjian.

I have already lost count on how many people have called Lee Kuan Yew as Hanjian. Similar was the case with that US ambassador to China who was Chinese.

I'm sure you have heard it countless times before, maybe from yourself and your sock puppet accounts, but I didn't say it, so how can I explain it. Though I'm sure you already know the term "Hanjian" can mean race traitor, or just a traitor to China in general. It depends on the context.

And yes, some people do put race/ethnicity above their nation, which I think is wrong, and I think is no different from the extremist/terrorist Uyghur groups in Xinjiang who put their race (Turkic) above their nation.

Chinese citizens should be loyal to China first. Not to foreigners and foreign nations for reasons of ethnicity, race or religion.

For those who prefer foreigners, they can always move to the ROC/Taiwan who share their sentiments, and I guess the ROC/Taiwan will exist for at least 5-10 more years.

Hindu have an "OG" status in Indonesia. Even if the whole country turns radical. Hindu & Buddhist religion will never be targeted.

As a chinese living here this is a worrying trend but what surprise me more is that this never happened before. Giant statue of deity is nothing new in Indonesia. We just built a giant buddha statue couple of years back & there's no outrage over it. The papuan government even have a plan to make a 100m tall jesus statue (taller than the one in rio) with built in viewing platform inside the head so you can see through Jesus's eyes... So they said.
Sorry, tell that to muslim extremist who believe ISIS, their barbarian knows no bound. If Chinese is targeted, sooner they will too. Balinese is less affected becos they are consider indigenous people but if religion is involved by extremist. As I say, it will have no bound.

Guan Yu represented courage, bravery, and brotherhood which many triad members worshiped. I thought it fit well with the Muslim extremists. LOL
Guan Yu also represent Justice and honor. These extremist Indo fucks have none of those traits

A lot of Chinese Indonesians did leave.
They leave their families in Singapore and elsewhere, and went back alone to make more money.

Why is this suddenly happening? I don't really see other countries objecting to mosques.

Tomorrow's world will be about adjusting and learning to give and take equally.

Not something to be proud about.

Surprised that an open minded country like Indonesia is doing this.

We have rule in Indonesia. You need permit from govt and approval from locals to build something, especially in size that big. Even a little mosque can be tear down if it only get half the permit required.

The reason for rejection isn't religious. People over there reject it because Guan Yu is a foreign who has no ties with Indonesian history and culture. And it's too big for them to ignore it. It's like if a Javanese built a giant statue of Gajah Mada in the middle of Beijing without asking around, imagine what the Chinese would say.

You can build mosques, churches, temples, statues in Indonesia all you like but ask the neighbors first.

And to be clear, the Chinese community themselves among those protesting the building of the statue of Guan Yu and asked it to be tear down.

Hindu worship many things or gods, the central belief is rebirth. Confucianism don't, ancestor spirit never change. They are totally different philosophy.

Hindu worship cow! So sad the cow can't speak, otherwise they will oppose to be worshiped by the dum6 crowds.

It is true what you have stated above. As someone who has spent time for 4 years in Indonesia and Malaysia, it amazed me how well local Indian and Chinese work together to survive among the many local hostility towards them whether its political motivated, racism or religious bigoted attitudes and yet both ethnicity on average are rich or middle income without even the support of the local government.

When the riot of 1998 occured against the Ethnic Chinese Indonesian, only ROC/Taiwan lodge protest against the horrible treatment/killing. Mainland China kept silence about it under the guise of no interfering with other nations's affair. I can tell you that it was the turning point for the oversea Chinese about how they viewed mainland china/PRC.

Cowards always have excuses. You'd better reply on yourselves. If someone threat your life, be tough, everyone has a death, you could make your death valuable rather than worthless.

Thanks for clarification.

I didn't know that the Chinese did not seek permission before making such a large monument.

Why not?

You have buddist extremism in Burma, rising hindutva, beef killings etc in india, chinese are no saints in west china why should Indonesians remain tolerant?

The issue here is entirely different, to what you and I are assuming.

Our friend, @katarabhumi was kind enough to clarify.

On the contrary take another look and you will see the rise of a more intolerant indonesia
The removal of the chinese governor and the way it happened should have shown you that

Indonesians not only effected by a rise in national/religious patriotism but also by whats happening in Burma, China etc minorities will come under pressure just like Burma and india
