A prominent Jihadi figure and former Afghan lawmaker Abdul Rab Rasool Sayyaf has said the Afghan nation achieved victory against the Soviet forces with almost 1.5 million human lives lost in the campaign.

Sayyaf was speaking during a gathering to mark the withdrawal of the Soviet forces from the country 28 years ago.

He said the whole Afghan nation should be proud of the day to mark the withdrawal of the Soviet forces, insisting that no external force can defeat the Afghan people.

Sayyaf further added that any provocative act or insult against Jihad will be considered as an attack on the religion.

He was apparently gesturing towards the growing frustration against the Jihadi leaders who were involved in a devastating civil following the withdrawal of the Soviet from the country.

In other parts of his speech, Sayyaf said the Mujahideen forces liberated the country which was sold to the outsiders, apparently gesturing towards the communist regime.

Sayyaf endorsed support for freedom of speech but warned against any attempts that undermine the values of the nation.

The Soviet forces launched an offensive on Afghanistan on 14th December 1979, deploying ground and air forces in the country.

The Soviet war in Afghanistan lasted nine years from December 1979 to February 1989. Part of the Cold War, it was fought between Soviet-led Afghan forces against multi-national insurgent groups called the mujahideen.

The problem is the mentality. Almost any nation can "survive" on rock bottom, you can't go lower than that. If Afghans and Afghanistan as a nation realise that their goal is not to survive a war and limp into the next one, but to thrive as a civilization and do so by peaceful coexistence*. They can then easily dub themselves as an undefeated nation.

*( Let's not forget, it was Afghanistan's arrogance that they refused to accept Durand Line as a border and in return gain a route to the Arabian Sea. Had they taken this path rather than the whole cosying up with the USSR, maybe they wouldn't even have been invaded in the first place.)

The current Russian leaders are still thinking to interfere in Afghanistan despite 28 years pass from the bitter defeat of the former Soviet Union forces in the country, an Afghan lawmaker said Tuesday.

The Speaker of the Lower House of the Parliament, Wolesi Jirga, Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, made the remarks during a gathering in Kabul to mark the 28th university of the withdrawal of Soviet forces.

He said the current Russian leaders are unfortunately still thinking to interfere despite 28 years have passed and are keen to weaken the democratic system of Afghanistan by supporting the Taliban group.

Ibrahimi further added that the defeat of the Soviet forces in Afghanistan 28 years ago must not be repeated by those thinking to interfere and must consider it as a major experience.

The remarks by Ibrahimi came as reports have emerged recently suggesting the growing establishment of relations between Russia and the Taliban group.

The top US commander in Afghanistan General John Nicholson said last week that Russia has become more assertive over the past year, overtly lending legitimacy to the Taliban to undermine NATO efforts and bolster belligerents using the false narrative that only the Taliban are fighting ISIL-K.

“Similarly, neighboring Iran is providing support to the Taliban while also engaging the Afghan government over issues of water rights, trade, and security,” he added.

Gen. Nicholson who is also the commander of the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission, made the remarks during a briefing to the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday.

Couldn't have said this better myself. If their greatest pride is their ability to survive as a nation, then they have set the bar as low as one possibly can. Its like a perfectly normal person being proud that he/she can walk. Forget university degrees, excelling in sports, playing musical instruments, why be proud of all that stuff when you can simply be proud at being able to walk.

Quoting numbers could be political in nature. So many studies shows wide range of Soviets who died in WW2.
Anyway, I though per UN, total Afghan death was around 900,000.

A prominent Jihadi leader and former member of the Afghan parliament Abdul Rab Rasool Sayyaf has said no one is favoring the collapse of the current government but serious reforms are need in various sectors.

Sayyaf was speaking during gathering organized by the former Jihadi leaders to mark the anniversary of the withdrawal of the former Soviet Union forces from the country.

He said the government should further step up fight against corruption and bring reforms in almost all sectors, including security and economy.

The former Jihadi leader further added that a partially developed political system in power is better than the absence of no system.

In other parts of his speech, Sayyaf reiterated the call for support to Mujahideen, insisting that the sacrifices of Mujahideen should not be ignored.

He also called on neighboring countries of Afghanistan to refrain from intervention and called on international community to continue their support to Afghanistan and the Afghan people.

The remarks by Sayyaf came as reports have emerged during the recent months suggesting the growing interference by regional countries in internal affairs of Afghanistan.

The persistent interferences by the regional countries, including Russia, have sparked furor among the Afghan officials.
