KARACHI: Syngenta Pakistan, a Switzerland-based company, dealing in premier crop protection and the third largest seeds business, announced to support small and medium growers to take up modern ways of farming, with the primary objective to ensure food security in the country, a statement said on Wednesday.

Tina Lawton, Syngenta’s head of Asia-Pacific Region, made her first visit to Pakistan and toured Syngenta’s research and development facility near Lahore to review Syngenta’s operations and understand the Pakistan agriculture market and how to support its further development, it added. She also met Syngenta franchisees and farmers to get insight on the market; whereby, assuring them Syngenta’s commitment to Pakistan and upholding its long tradition of 50 plus years presence in the country. She also discussed the modernisation of the Naya-savera Franchise model with the use of latest pioneering technology.

Lawton said that Syngenta’s transition of new ownership to ChemChina will not affect its status as a Swiss company and it will continue to focus on long-term investment through over $1.4 billion annual investment in research and development in Pakistan, the statement said.

Lawton’s visit proved extremely fruitful and truly demonstrated the Syngenta’s commitment to improve the life of farmers. I heard there is zero local seed production. Pakistan and for that matter all 3rd world countries will forever depend upon european amd american multi mational seed producers. It is suicide. This is how dajjal will control all agri and cattle produce.

Please take a step back and listen.
We are living in middle ages of agriculture. The vegetables and fruits that we do gladly called desi are a type which we are familiar with, similarly there are 100 types of grapes and 100 types of cucumber. What we usually eat we call it desi, all other are Chinese, GM or farmi....
This company introduce such insecticides and pesticides that are not harmful to environment and didn't cause cancer. The vegetables and fruits we eat are heavily sprayed by such dangerous chemicals that cause cancer and diseases. That's why our products are banned.
Introducing new verity of seed is a revolution. For example you can get cotton seed which require less water and can be grown in sindh and Baluchistan. You can grow crops that are drought tolerant in places of less water. You can grow crops that can be grown in different types of soil such as chalky , sandy or clay.
Besides you can grow the verities to export. New verities cab produce tons of crop from a single plant and they are not GM, GM is totally different thing. Hybrids are other different things.
Newer methods of tunnel farming, drip irrigation, greenhouse farming can produce clean bumper crops in smaller space.
Such verities that do excellent in heat and cold are introduced in respective areas. The disease free verities are used, instead of the ones that are full of disease. This is an excellent initiative.
Their chemical products are environment friendly and better then other.
We already import seeds from abroad. Our farmers get what importers import. Usually importers import 1 or 2 verities that are famous, they do well in one part while perform badly in others . But when larger types are available , different farmers in different areas having different conditions can buy seed according to their need.....

True about our produce being of inferior quality and sprayed with deadly poisons! But i am not sure about GM crops i am no expert but dont they mess up with land and in long term destroy fertility of soil?

GM seeds and foods are banned. They must be heavily banned in Pakistan too. I heard many greedy farmers use it without the care of people health.

Yeh many farmers are using monsanto corn seed.
what we need is 1st good seeds 2nd cheap irrigation system 3rd cold chain and 4th honest irrigation dept people.

Syngenta is one of many subsidiary multinationals under ChemChina - a state owned enterprise - so I believe they should have communicated well with brothers in Pak authorities beforehand.

Sad to read about how Monsanto hurts Indian farmers! I don't know much about GM tech so no comment on the seed, but I do know seed is Monsanto's main business. Do note Syngenta's main business is agrochemicals, not seed, see below 2015 revenues of sectors by companies. Through introducing agrochemical technologies, I do hope this $1.4 billion investment by ChemChina-Syngenta can boost agriculture sector of Pakistan.
