UK investment fund is set to build one of the world’s largest solar power projects in the world in Iran by the end of the decade.

The deal between Quercus and Iran’s Ministry of Energy is worth over €500m (£440m) and will bring forward a giant 600MW solar project within the next three years by building a 100MW standalone installation every six months.

Diego Biasi, chief executive of Quercus, said the deal offers “an unrivalled opportunity” to tap into the huge potential in Iran’s burgeoning renewable energy market, and an opportunity for Britain to deepen its ties with the Middle East’s second largest economy as it prepares to leave the European Union.

“Not only is this positive news for us, but also fantastic news for the UK, representing a major milestone for trade relations with Iran. Iran is seeing unprecedented levels of investments since the lifting of international sanctions, and we are proud to be leading the UK’s push into this market,” he said.
The deal is Quercus’ largest deal outside of the UK and is part of Iran’s drive to build 5GW of renewable energy by 2020.

Hamid Baeidinejad, Iran’s Ambassador to the UK, said the project demonstrates the country’s commitment to developing renewable energy, and in particular solar power. Iran enjoys around 300 sunny days a year.
“Iran, with its special geographic characteristics and position, will be a major hub of solar energy serving the region and beyond. This mega project is the foundation towards that goal,” he said.

We badly need foriegn investment to modernize this countries infastructure.

5GW of renewable energy by 2020 - Can someone give us an overview of the ongoing projects? Iran like all other Mena states needs desperately more investment in the field of solar energy.

Mapna group already build and installed it's 2.5 MW wind turbine and they are working to expand it

also Iran start to produce solar panels locally in several productionlines in different cities

also, 600MW mean more than half of the size of Bushehr Nuclear planet which is 1GW

Thanks for sharing. 600 MW isn't much actually, neither for Iran nor for Turkey. I suppose the problem in case of Iran is that a free market is practically non-existent. In modern Western countries investors and citizens are pumping money into the solar industry, building capacities. It is different in China though but I guess everything is different over there due to the size.

It is interesting to know that China is leading the world in solar power (installed capacity, solar power production, biggest manufacturer etc.), however, only 1% of China's power comes from solar energy. http://www.bbc.com/news/business-40341833

If we are building panels domestically,1250 panels per day according to one of the videos posted here, why do we buy an over priced English system. This is a way to buy political lobby abroad.

Who sets up these factories and where do they get all the automated components.

b/c we must use all of capacities.
and who said they are over priced, also nobody will give the money to them at once we don't know about details of agreement.

I can't understand your question.
those wind turbines are made by mapna group.

Iran should also focus on wind and the hydro electric since they are working on a project like SUEZ canal

why do we buy an over priced English system

We aren't buying, they are investing, which means they build it, and make their money by selling the electricity.

like Airbus deal !?
for your reminder , several month later it was revealed that we bought those air plane in cash and there wasn't any FOREIGN INVESTMENT ....

It was never meant to be an investment.... it was meant to be a sale of planes, which was banned before.

I am talking about the Solar panels . One of the videos above shows manufacturing of panels with a good portion of the process automated. It looks like a turn key production plant was purchased and is now being operated in Iran.

I was referring to the robots( the automated portion of the plants). My guess is that the entire plant was purchased from China, since they are the biggest producer of Solar panels. The Chinese probably are providing all the raw material that takes to the run the plant.

We aren't buying, they are investing, which means they build it, and make their money by selling the electricity.

They are not investing in Jack. Just like Solar packages for residential homes in the US and Europe, They install over priced systems that on average take 12-15 years to break even. The expected life of the panels are 25 years but with significant drop in effectiveness.

The reporter from Yazd is interviewing the project manager. He clearly states that they have the complete capacity in Iran but the government is giving the project to foreigners.

The subsequent video confirms Iran is a major importer of Solar technology and that is the reason only 1% of the energy is produced by Solar ( high cost of imports) compared with Germany which gets 70% of its energy needs from Solar.

Solar systems are nothing new and they have been around not for 35 years. Like I said, someone is getting a fat payoff.
