Paris deploys 'anti-migrant boulders' to thwart makeshift refugee camps

First there were anti-migrant grills to block off pavements, now Paris City Hall has rolled in large boulders to dissuade migrants from setting up camps outside an official humanitarian centre in Paris.

The boulders appeared under a flyover at Porte de La Chapelle in the 18th arrondissement, of northern Paris, where migrants often sleep rough while waiting for one of the 400 spaces in the nearby official humanitarian welcome centre.

The boulders were put in place by the Paris City Hall, without the knowledge of Emmaus solidarité, the charity that runs the humanitarian migrant centre which opened November 2016.

“It’s not the first time that these boulders have been installed around the centre, we weren’t advised about it the first time, nor were we this time," the association said.

The boulders are designed to make it hard for people to take shelter under the bridge, however those waiting for spots at the centre are managing to sleep in between the huge ocks.

“It’s difficult to sleep here," one migrant told Le Parisien newspaper after the boulders were brought in.

This isn’t the only piece of so-called "hostile architecture" Paris authorities have installed to stop migrants from making camps in the city.

After the camps at Stalingrad Metro was cleared, metal grills were erected blocking off areas where refugees had set up camps, such as along Avenue de Flandre and the Place de la Bataille-de-Stalingrad.

This is the idiotic and inhuman way of tackling the issue by typical French roosters. It is not that France is the most affected country due to the refugees..Sweden and other countries have also been affected but their way of dealing with issue is humane, civilised and scientific. None of these attributes can be associated with the French way of handling the situation. What an utter disgrace and an eye-sore.

I don't care about young and able bodied economic migrants men (majority of them) who come illegally to other countries and think they are entitled to everything.
Seems like the Paris municipality has enough of makeshifts camps popping up everywhere which only brings dirt and insecurity to the area.

Everything is being done to make their lives difficult in the street. The Police for exemple is accused of stealing their blankets and shoes.
I only feel sorry about how the smugglers fooled them and made them think that Europe was purely an utopia.

Well if French government had supplied people with some village area shelter may be the problem would be lesser

France is a big country , and the government could have setup a temporary shelter outside in village area where the folks could have done basic farming type work etc till a permenent solution was found

This seems like a problem becasue people are sleeping on street or making garbage shelters

To be fair, NATO did and continues to support rebels in Syria. So it's unfair for you guys to not take in refugees.

Not a good idea, because of the prospect of 'ghettos' springing up.

A better solution is to open up some kind of volunteer programme where a few financially stable families sponsor a refugee family and help them get set up in their own town or city. This would not only distribute the refugee population, but also give refugee families the opportunity to integrate into French culture.

This is pretty much what the Canadians have done with their private sponsorship programme, and is probably the most successful refugee programme around.
