With the Recent cancellation of a deal to procure Black Shark Heavyweight Torpedoes for its front line conventional Kalavari class Diesel submarines and Nuclear Arihant class submarines meant that India’s major underwater sea platforms will be operational without one of its major offensive weapons to take on enemy submarines and warships in high seas.

Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)’s Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) who are in charge of developing Torpedoes for Indian Navy has successfully developed ship-launched Varunastra heavyweight torpedoes (HWTs) which will likely enter into production and service by the end of this year as per media reports.

Variant of Varunastra heavyweight torpedoes for operation from Submarine is dubbed “Takshak” this is one program which DRDO and Indian Navy needs to fast track to fill the void left cancellation of Black Shark deal and offer permanent solutions to avoid import dependency of crucial weapons systems for its operations by Navy .

Takshak HWTs are wire guided torpedoes which require constant communication between the torpedo and the firing ship. If the wire does breaks, Takshak becomes an autonomous torpedo like its ship-launched variant and can travel up to a distance of 40 km for taking out submarines and can operate up to a depth of 400 m.

Takshak heavyweight torpedoes nearly weighing a tonne each contains 250 kg of explosives can travel at a speed of 40 knots an hour, going in circles and bobbing up and down to attack targets. guidance system enables it to take the optimum path towards the target, and its onboard computer guides its rudder’s navigation towards the target. Takshak has a warhead has a proximity fuse, with the blast occurring about 8 m from the target.

DRDO also plans to develop Shakti heavyweight torpedoes with thermal propulsion and also working on Advanced light-water torpedoes (ALWTs) likely to be operational by 2016-17 but each Torpedo development programme is extensive ,time-consuming and can take up nearly 10-15 years of development times before they enter production , India needs to invest in infrastructure for testing and development of torpedoes to enable our scientists to fast-track their progress and shorten their developmental circle.

IN is a gem.

I just can't believe how IN is able to work within the system and make such great decisions
AND
IN and IA present in the same system have such a poor track record!

Can anyone explain the discrepancy?

Better management of projects.

It's called work culture. Being awarded the smallest share of defence budget since decades, right from the early days IN had to plan well for making the best out of their share of the budget and there was no better way for this other than depending on local production. This culture got passed on to later generations of officers and took IN to the position it is now.

One can only wish IA nd IAF walks the same path someday.

INDIA'S ‪‎Varunastra‬ heavy weight torpedo to be handed over formally to the Indian Navy in the next few minutes. Here's a note just released by the DRDO:

Varunastra is the first indigenous state-of -the-art heavy weight ship launched anti-submarine electric torpedo designed and developed by Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), a premier lab of DRDO. It is capable of targeting quiet and stealthy submarines, both in deep and littoral waters in intense countermeasure environment.

Varunastra has been designed with latest technologies such as high speed and long endurance propulsion, software driven intelligence, conformal array acoustic homing with wide look angle and advanced digital signal processing. It is also having advanced autonomous guidance algorithms with low drift navigational aids, insensitive warhead which can operate in various combat scenarios.

Varunastra exercise variant has integrated instrumentation system for recording all the dynamic parameters of the weapon, redundancy in recovery aids in case of emergency shut down or malfunction. It has GPS based locating aid, a unique feature in contemporary torpedoes in the world. Varunastra is extensively tested at sea in association with Indian Navy for evaluating the weapon capabilities as per Naval Staff qualitative requirements. The weapon has completed all environmental qualification tests like shock, vibration, temperature cycling, marine environmental tests, EMI/EMC tests etc.

This torpedo has been developed with high degree of modularity with more than 95 per cent indigenous content. All the test systems, accessories, special tools and handling equipment are developed simultaneously, enabling smooth maintenance, sourcing of spares, industry support and up-gradation. M/s Bharat Dynamics Ltd. has been associated with NSTL in the development of Varunastra as a production agency.

This is in line with “MAKE IN INDIA” initiative by Hon’ble Prime Minister.
