Astra BVRAAM Developmental Trails
Upbeat on the Continuous success of beyond visual range air-to-air Astra missile from fighter aircraft Sukhoi. Sources close to idrw.org have informed that a possible spin of the programme will be to develop Vertical Launch variant of Astra missiles as a short range, ground-based air defence system.

DRDO will officially offer such system to Armed forces which can be used as low-level quick-reaction air defence system based on Astra missiles which will be similar to Rafael supplied Spyder LLQRM systems to Indian air force (IAF).

Sources confirmed that Astra missiles fired from Ground-based launchers in the previous phase of testing had successfully hit Electronic target and it had also validated flight characters of the missile system which clears path to develop a ground-based air defence system.

Ground-based Astra air defence system will provide 360° coverage (vertical launch) and will be Fire-and-Forget system with Interception range up to 20 km. It is still not clear how many missiles can be carried on one launcher, but Missile system can be used to provide defence against a wide range of targets, including fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters and UAVs said source.

@sancho is this real?

Mil what is unreal here ? It's an Anti Aircraft missile . VL or from Jets it is developed to destroy aerial threat .

But now problem is its range . Are looking at 30-40 range or very long range . Which cannot happen unless adding additional booster.

the ref was to sancho as I have been advocating a SAM version of Astra since last two years here.

Then why to invest in Maitri SAM
Then why to invest in Maitri SAM

Because we will get competitive technology which we will use for our future Missiles and upgrade current missiles . Remember Akash is Lil over weight . Maitri will boost army's anti air defence during combats. We are investing 1 billion USD in our new Seaker technology , which I belive will get lots of boost from the Americans , france and Israel . Maitri is a hack just like our Danush missiles . Range can be increased with less effort than in Akash SAM system .

What does India's current SAM cover look like?

quite lack lustre, important locations have gainful, key installations have a some PMU II's, most mil locations are covered by 4 batts of gaskin mod 0, forward locations have mix batteries of gammon and gainfuls, now augumented with Akash, and Spyder batts

I guess that India has a couple of S-300 batteries, at least hope the rumours are true.

But to continue fielding ancient soviet antiques is too much now. Tungushka, Spyder are the only modern SAM systems India has now. A modern military without modern SAM shield is a dead military.

India already has 25 km range Akash, adding another 20 km range missile?
The range is a non-issue as DRDO are already working on a mk.2 version of the Astra with a longer range the key here is the lessons and technology DRDO will be able to accrue by developing a ground VL variant of an advanced BVR missile.

Why can't we have a SAM system that can reach 300+ Km

What is this obsession with adding little by little
