Indian MoD approves buy of 6 Airbus A330 for Indian AWACS

It doesn't matter how many A330s flying in India in airlines, but for IAF it's the 3rd AWACS platform, with different logistic, spares and training. And it doesn't have any commonality to the Phalcons, since not only the platform is a different one, but the radar won't be an Israeli one either. It might have "some" commonality to the current DRDO AWACS radar system, but that's just a minor part, which won't help much to speed up the development, let alone the induction.DRDO is doing a great work to keep IAF inferior to it's eastern and western opponents, that already have proper AWACS coverage.

I also thought so, what is the point of having 3 different platforms.....

Why Airbus????

Both are two different things right? One is to bring seriousness in them..... the other to provide them order to work with.......

What other option does he have?

Not really, if you actually mean what you say, you stick to your words. The PM bashed them for delays in LCA and gave them an award for LCA. The DM just said this week, that DRDO must stop to take too many projects and now provides them with another AWACS project, befor the first one is done. This kind of doublespeak won't make DRDO more efficient or accountable right?

. :tsk:

In case you have'nt noticed yet.. it is the airframes and engines that call for the most regular PM routines in a an aircraft, which is unrelated to with who on earth owns or flies the a/c. MRO for the A-330 exists in India already!

In case you have'nt noticed another thing yet; MRO for IAF aircraft is already being opened to the Pvt. Sector. The era of "St.Anthony of the Teflon-coated Dhoti" and the dinosaurical ideas of PSU and Govt. strangle-hold on Aviation in India even in the MoD. As for the rest, its your suppositions and surmises that are on the surface; there is no evidence that it is part of the AEWACs project.

And that is the nonsense reason for DRDO to develop it, to claim that they have developed something WORLD CLASS! When will these people finally start defending the nation and not only their egos!

Good point. Every ask yourself that ?

LOL. How old are you ?

That is exactly how motivation works. I take it you have never lead any sort of team ?

MRO for the A-330 exists in India already!

And nobody cares, because that doesn't reduce the logistical burden withing IAF, that has to operate 3 different aircrafts, with 3 different radar systems, 3 different types of internal systems, needs to train pilots for 3 different types of Aircrafts, needs to train ground crews for 3 different types of aircrafts, that are operated at IAF air bases not civil airports... So it's not about the maintenance or regular checks, but the operational service on a day to day base that will be streched by adding another different type of platform and radar system.

Spend some time in this forum, you will get to know the members better....... till then keep all those question to yourself........

Going by DRDO's history and failure of its “Project Guardian/Airawat" in the past...I hope this developmental project is a success.

Did you just post your 1st smiley on the forum??? :P

As said, it's a pet project of DRDO for their ego, nothing else. Former Air Chief Browne stated that IAF don't want that project now, but wants more smaller AWACS ASAP, which however is not good enough for DRDO as it seems.
Airbus as reported is the only vendor that replied to DRDO's RFP, so is the only choice we have now, which logically leaves them in a good position to demand high costs. The A330 MRTT cost around $250 millions each, if I remember correctly, we paid around $300 millions for all 3 Embraer 145s and we badly need numbers!

That is exactly how the DRDO operate. A bunch of teenagers sitting around massaging their Egos

As a matter of fact IAF said they did not want the smaller AWAC on Emberer platform, instead they asked DRDO to develop a more powerful AWAC with 360 degree coverage on a long endurance platform.

The choice was between buying one and building one, and guess what communal Parrikar and Modi did ? :P ....... he choose to build one. How you must hate him for it.

The cost is Rs. 5100 crores for 2 AWACS, i.e. 823 Million $ for 2 AWACS. Not bad at all by any standard.

The current purchase is for Circular Radome similar to Phalcon AWACS. I agree with logistic night mare.

May be they thought Airbus is a good platform for indigenous AWACS.
