A world Muslim leader on Saturday denounced recent violent attacks carried out in the name of Islam as he brought his message of peace to Calgary.

Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the spiritual head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, said the slaying of a British soldier, the Boston Marathon bombings and the Via Rail bomb plot “give the wrong message of the true teachings of Islam.”

“We are trying to build the true message of Islam, which is peace, love and harmony,” he told reporters at the Baitun Nur mosque.

A relatively small religious sect, the Ahmadis are heavily persecuted for their faith, which is at odds with some orthodox Muslim views.

Reports suggest between 25,000 and 50,000 Ahmadis reside in Canada, mainly in urban centres such as Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto.

On Saturday, Ahmad acknowledged the high-profile terrorist attacks conducted by Muslim extremists are a roadblock in reaching peace, but said his campaign isn’t countering any specific violence.

“We have been condemning it all the time,” Ahmad said. “We have been giving the message of peace all the time.”

Mayor Naheed Nenshi, North America’s first big-city Muslim mayor, also met with the spiritual leader.

The visiting khalifa, who lives in London, England, has twice before stopped in Calgary. In 2008, he joined religious leaders and high-ranking politicians in opening the gargantuan Baitun Nur house of worship on Calgary’s northeastern edge.

At 48,000-sq.-ft, the mosque is considered the largest in Canada and ranks among the top worldwide.

Aren't they the so called "fake" Muslims? The ones that teach Islam in a different manner and are persecuted by other Muslims?

The man stood for what he believed in and he deserves to be respected. Just like Ali Al-Ammen you know? The Lebanese Shia Imam he denounced Hezbollah and guess what? His office was sat on fire!

Correct...

Most of these Ahmedis get killed in Pakistan, and they are ofiicially classified as non-Muslims by the Pak Govt. Same with most other Islamic countries AFAIK...

There us no such thing as Ahmadi Muslim..
Ahmadi are not Muslims ..just Ahmadi..
It's pseudo religion designed to mock islam..similar to scientology which mocked Christianity but later caught on.

or Mormon Christian...
some dude in America thought why not drag Jesus to America Instead of somewhere in middle east...and went on to invent a religion if his own similar to Christianity...

What is wrong in that? Mormon Christian or Catholic Christian he is a Christian.

It depends on where you are. A Ahamadi in UK or US or Canada or India is a Muslim

yup...
also in these countries churches marry gay couples...although there is no place of gay in Christianity...so yeah I am not surprised if to them Ahmadi is Muslim.
Thankfully in Pakistan they are legally defined as non Muslims.

It's ironic: the Ahmaddiya community in the U.S. was instrumental at crafting, post-9/11, positive American attitudes towards Muslims yet they themselves are abused by the members of the community they claim to be a part of, mostly (as near as I can tell) for the pro-peace attitude of their sect.
