WASHINGTON: The United States has withdrawn negotiators from Pakistan after talks failed to produce an agreement on reopening Nato supply routes into Afghanistan, the Pentagon said Monday.

“The decision was reached to bring the team home for a short period of time,” Pentagon spokesman George Little told reporters.

The team of negotiators had been in Pakistan for about six weeks, he said, as US officials had believed they were close to a deal with Islamabad to lift the blockade on Nato convoys.

But no breakthrough was imminent and there was no scheduled time for a resumption of the negotiations, Little said.

“I believe that some of the team left over the weekend and the remainder of the team will leave shortly,” said the spokesman. “This was a US decision.”

Pakistan shut its border to Nato supply convoys in November after a US air strike killed 24 Pakistani soldiers at the Salala border checkpost.

Members of the team started to leave over the weekend and the remainder of the negotiators would soon return to the United States.

The comments came after Pakistan’s army chief, General Ashfaq Kayani, refused last week to meet US assistant defense secretary Peter Lavoy, who traveled to Pakistan to try to resolve the dispute.

The roads through Pakistan are a crucial logistical link for Nato as it plans a large-scale withdrawal of combat troops and equipment by the end of 2014.

But US officials have so far rejected Pakistani proposals to charge steep fees of several thousand dollars for each alliance truck crossing the border.

Washington has also refused to issue an explicit apology for the lethal air raid.

The stalled negotiations also coincide with remarks last Thursday by US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, in which he accused Islamabad of failing to crack down on Haqqani insurgents operating inside Pakistan and attacking US-led troops in neighboring Afghanistan.

Its very simple , Kiyani refer this case to PPP govt and PPP govt wants to bring all political parties on board to take decision of opening route. But next year is election year, so everyone run away from PPP, because this decision will have big impact for any candidate to win election . So, US need to wait or tell Zaradari do early election and after election open the route.
But miliitary is daily target on Pak private TV channel anchors, so thats obvious they will stay away from any decision.

Lol I was just going through the other thread which says that US is ready to apologise. If you go through the first page of that thread, pakistanis were laughing on Indians.

US was ready to apologies, but do you know the legal implications of this apologies? . Why US all of sudden refuse apologies two reason behind that.
This apology will be binding contract for the future under UN law.
Second its election year in US, Obama administration doesn't want to take any risk of apology.

I thinks, American gravely underestimating Pakistani resistance this time....Panetta sabre rattling didn't impress anyone in Islamabad, media too only gives ticker news on it, nothing else.

No doubt Papa is angry as usual......but the kid also grown up....he has to remember!!

Now we are in uncharted waters. What next? Uncle Sam has a long memory, lets see how they respond. I bet, we will have some news in the immediate future :disagree:

Now is the time for Political and Military Leadership in Pakistan to be completely united.Even Opposition should be united with Government on this. All domestic quarrels should resolved now because this is how US will blackmail Pakistan now (Suddenly they will start talking about human rights and other BS)
