What's new

US Drone strikes in Pakistan are illegal under international law.

I know exactly what the GoP thinks about the drone strikes based on the official statements by the Pakistani Foreign Office - spinning conspiracy theories in the face of facts and an inability to counter arguments does not change the facts. The facts are the US's own stated rationale (as argued by Brennan) is hollow and has been taken apart on a mere internet forum, and the facts are that the official Pakistani position on the drone strikes is clear on the illegality of the strikes.

AM, Again, everything you say ^^^ is YOUR opinion. I am not trying to dissuade you from your opinion. I am merely trying to have you see that manipulating thread titles to score "debating" points is not healthy for the Forum. It is an abuse of power, on YOUR part. I am sorry that you cannot see that. I am trying to preserve the Forum's integrity by pointing out that an argument participant, who happens to be an Admin or Moderator, should not use his special powers to subvert the debate. The mod/admin staff should be objective. Changing the "Missile Strikes in FATA" title the way you did is the antithesis of objectivity. You are diminishing the Forum in an effort to score points in pursuit of a personal mission. Pull back. Please.

It isn't 'illegal' if Pakistan gives their 'blessing' on the strikes but denies it publicly because they have a SHIITE-LOAD of Islamofascists they need to appease, is it ?

We know the obvious dude. Pakistani government denies it publicly but under the table, it's all green signal ROFL!

Guess what the official position is of no use unless its translated into action :undecided:!! I wish Pakistani Military or Government had taken some action.

I have 'substantiated' my opinion - US arguments claiming 'drone strikes are legal' have been debunked.

The refutation and thread title are in sync with the official position of the Government of Pakistan, and the US and its apologists have so far been unable to offer any counterargument supporting the contention that US drone strikes in Pakistan are legal.

The title change is therefore completely fair and accurate.

Omani jihadist killed in US airstrike in 'Khorasan'

By BILL ROGGIO, May 14, 2012

An Omani jihadist was among several foreign fighters who were killed in a recent US drone strike in the "Khorasan," according to a statement released on jihadist Internet forums.

The statement, which was unsigned, said that Abu Hamza al Omani, also known as Imran bin Abdullah bin Khamis al Balochi, was killed in a US airstrike on May 5, 2012 along with several other "brothers and supporters" who were not identified.

"The courageous knight dismounted on the night of Saturday, 5 May 2012, when the planes of the infidel enemy targeted a center in which there were several mujahideen. The brother fell as a martyr, accompanied by a number of his brothers and supporters...," said the statement, which was translated by the SITE Intelligence Group.

Although the location of the "center" was not disclosed, the statement claimed that Abu Hamza al Omani and the other fighters were killed in "the land of Khorasan," which includes Pakistan and Afghanistan.

On May 5, the US carried out a drone strike in the Shawal Valley in North Waziristan. The strike targeted a compound known to be used as a training center, killing 10 "militants" [see LWJ report, US drones kill 10 in North Waziristan]. Situated near the Afghan border, the Shawal Valley is a known operating area for al Qaeda, the Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan, and Taliban fighters under the command of Hafiz Gul Bahadar, the leader of the Taliban in North Waziristan.

Al Qaeda and the Khorasan

The term "Khorasan" refers to a region that encompasses large areas of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Iran. Jihadists consider the Khorasan to be the area where they will inflict the first defeat against their enemies in the Muslim version of Armageddon. The final battle is to take place in the Levant - Israel, Syria, and Lebanon.

Mentions of the Khorasan have begun to increase in al Qaeda's propaganda over the past several years. After al Qaeda's defeat in Iraq, the group began shifting its rhetoric from promoting Iraq as the central front in its jihad and has placed the focus on the Khorasan.

Al Qaeda typically is referring to Afghanistan and Pakistan's tribal areas when it mentions Khorasan. In February 2012, a senior al Qaeda operative said that al Qaeda is "still standing" despite repeated US drone strikes in the Khorasan; the US drone program in the region primarily kills al Qaeda leaders and fighters in Pakistan's tribal areas. Also in February 2012, al Qaeda released images of leaders and fighters who were killed in drone strikes in Pakistan's tribal areas and in airstrikes in Afghanistan.

Pakistani students win international award for film on drones

The Other Side: Of drone attacks in Pakistan - YouTube

A short film on US drone attacks in Pakistan made by Iqra University students won an international award this week, said a press release.

The film The Other Side was awarded with Best Audience Award at National Film Festival For Talented Youth, Washington. The short film is written and directed by Danish Qasim along with five other team members.

The 20-minute film revolves around the idea of assessing social, psychological and economical affects of drones on the people in tribal areas of Pakistan.

The film identifies the problems faced by families who have become victims of drone missiles, and it unearths the line of action which terrorist groups adopt to use victimised families for their vested interests.

Despite being chosen for the award, the filmmakers were unable to attend the award ceremony as their visa applications were rejected twice.

“If we got the visa then it would have been easy for us to frame our point of view in front of the other selected youth filmmakers,” Qasim said.

“The film gained interest from the audience across the globe compelling festival administrators to give Audience Award to the film,” he added.

More world recognize the drones illegally killing more families, children, grandparents, friends, I don't think drones will be survive next 5-10 years.

Who decides that?? I mean like you believe this is illegal, a bunch of other members believe that US attacking terrorists in Pakistan is an act similar to self defense. And that gets us to the point TS is trying to make.. Its seems a case of might is right.. Just like you have not been convinced that the strikes are justified, a lot of others are not convinced that they are not.. But then you decide to go ahead and change the title from "Missile strikes in FATA" (which does not go with either POV) to the existing one, which panders to a one sided view... First signs of becoming a propaganda site in my view...

NATO protests: Chicago police arrest activists ahead of rally expected to draw thousands

CHICAGO—Thousands of anti-NATO demonstrators were expected to converge Friday for a Chicago rally that promises to be a prelude to a much larger march Sunday, when world leaders begin two days of talks. Many office buildings were closed and workers told to stay home, and lawyers for protesters said arrests had begun.

G8 and NATO leaders gather

National Nurses United officials said they expected about 2,000 nurses to attend Friday's rally, where they planned to call for a “Robin Hood” tax on financial institutions' transactions to offset cuts in social services, education and health care. But city officials said the rally likely will draw more than 5,000 because of a performance by former Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, an activist who has played at many Occupy protest events.

In a sign of the building tension, lawyers for protesters said Chicago police raided an apartment building where activists were staying and arrested nine people Wednesday night. The Chicago chapter of the National Lawyers Guild said officers broke down doors and produced no warrants.

“The nine have absolutely no idea what they're being charged with because they were not engaged in any criminal activity at all,” said guild attorney Sarah Gelsomino. “They're really very confused and very frightened.”

The Chicago Police Department refused to comment.

The G8 economic summit originally was to be held in Chicago but was moved to Camp David, Maryland. Police and the Secret Service have taken no chances as Obama and 50 heads of state begin arriving for the NATO summit, where leaders will discuss the war in Afghanistan and European missile defence.

Sunday's anti-NATO march underscores that money spent fighting wars means less money for needs such as health care, education and other social programs, said Andy Thayer, a march organizer. His group — Coalition Against the NATO/G8 War & Poverty Agenda — has been working to draw those connections ever since President Barack Obama moved the G-8 summit, potentially dampening enthusiasm for a Chicago demonstration.

“I think it's really going to be big ... with the nurses,” Thayer said. “That is going to be the 99 per cent staking itself against the 1 per cent, drawing the connections between the war abroad and the war on working people here at home.”

Estimates of how many might show up Sunday have varied widely, from a couple thousand to more than 10,000. Busloads of demonstrators from around the country have begun arriving in Chicago, though some who had planned to come, including from the Occupy movement, have said they're staying home or going to an area near Camp David instead.

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said Thursday that the protesters so far “have been very well behaved.”

Might is right.

In real world US and in def.pk Agnostic Muslim.

Pakistan should evict militants from its territory and US should stop drones. I mean drones are really setting a bad precedent. Tomorrow it could be robots on ground.

Not even close. In a world that respects fairness and is against arbitrary power, Agnostic Muslims's use of his power as a moderator in changing the thread title here is a clear case of "might makes right", in his mind, of course. I am powerless to stop him or to change his arrogant use of his power, but that does not make him "right". In my eyes he has behaved like a "jerk", pure and simple

Yes, absolutely. If Pakistan was not giving safe harbor to militants who attack innocent civilians in Afghanistan, then there would be no drone strikes. Drone strikes are merely anti-Haqqani strikes. No Haqqani network in FATA, no drone strikes. It's not complicated.

PS. If India wants to strike the anti-Indian terrorists, who are sheltered in Pakistan, then that is India's decision. The USA strikes those who are at war with us and our ally, Afghanistan.

No surprise--Truthseeker and typical Indians trolling.
