How different was it? I am wondering if it was really like how shown in these photos.

Regardless, afghanistan was a secular and progressive society which believed in freedom. Women could wear as they liked and do as they pleased. It was completely destroyed due to the Taliban terrorist insurgency.
This must be the Elite class of Afghanistan in 1950's.
This is like one small group/area (not even all of Kabul) of Afghanistan, why not compare tribal areas?

BS.
It was completely and utterly destroyed by the Soviet Invasion. Thank God USSR broke. It deserved it

Not to sound like a extremist but maybe this modern(western) cultural is the reason for it's current situation in the first place.I mean women wearing skirts and showing their legs!(No offense to people outside my cultural or religious community)

Soviets = Godless Bastards
Soviets = Communist
Soviets = More Infidel culture
Soviets = etc
The Afghan King(s) and P.M.(s) didnt have an open rebellion before the Soviets came. There were only small pockets of resistance from Mullahs.

You probably didn't get my point.My point was based more on religious beliefs,so never mind.How on earth can a woman wearing a skirt lead to extremist sentiment.
We should be tolerant and let anyone where whatever he or she pleases. This has nothing to do with it. Afghanistan was used as a battleground by the CIA and the Soviets to fight their war. CIA pumped 4 billion $ into what we called the mujahideen then and now call terrorists.
The US started and created terrorism in the world. How was it right to support these people then and how is it not right now?
We all know the elections in Egypt aren't going as planned(If you are following the news) and well Syria is pretty much in front of you.You and i both know the road they are headed down(i do hope for their good)if that is the case then what about Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, etc??
One more thing in 50's Afghanistan was that it used to call almost all of Pakistan's territory as it's own. Baluchistan, FATA, KP, some parts of GB were considered to be Afghan land. They shouldn't have involve in such cr@p and things would have been much better in this region and for Afghanistan.
